The layouts I posted are as if you were looking at the disty cap. Both manuals show that the BLOCK is:
135
246
if you're standing in front of the car facing it.
but the disty orders are different.

That's correct just remember that when the manual refers to left and right on the engine it is from the point of view of the disty. So left bank is front, right bank is rear.

Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE She's ALIVE!!
Yes, the cap is numbered, but I read where a guy replaced his disty with an aftermarket one, and the numbers on the cap were INCORRECT.
Also, my original question wasn't quite understood I guess...
Look at the DISTY, which of these patterns is CORRECT for a KF?
CHILTON:
546
123
HAYNES (for Ford Probe KL):
453
612
The Chilton manual actually covers the K8 engine, which is basically a KF.
The Haynes covers the KL in the Ford Probe, which still is same engine layout as the K8 and KF, but the disty cap on Becca's MX is like the Haynes version.
So I'm stumped. Is Chilton correct or is Haynes? And if Chilton IS correct? What's up with the mislabeled disty cap?

Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE She's ALIVE!!
I honestly think the disty cap is correct (which would make the Haynes manual correct), because that's how we've had it wired up, and the car ran fine - well enough for me to drive it into town, pump gas, get pizza, and drive home. Like I said, at the time, the only issue was the erratic idle.

Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE She's ALIVE!!
Hey guys, Becca's bf back with another question...
So Becca ordered a Crank Position Sensor, and after fighting off a wasp nest in the wheel well, we replaced the sensor.
Got the battery recharged, and engine is turning over strongly, but isn't starting.
Seems like the engine is trying to fire, because the speed of rotations will abruptly increase after the starter has engaged and is turning the engine over.
I should note, that after a couple of failed attempts, we've noticed a prominent fuel odor coming from the back of the car. We could smell it in the car, and mostly at the rear. A little in the engine bay, but not really noticeable.
My gut seems to think there may be a severed fuel line underneath it somewhere, possible dry rotted. After all, right after we got the engine put back together, we immediately found leaking fuel hoses at the fuel rail.
I've narrowed it down to these possibilities:
- Faulty ICM (which is inside the disty. Disty is new though!)
- Faulty ignition coil (also inside the disty. But disty is....well, ya know!)
- Clogged fuel filter
- Leaking fuel line near fuel tank
- Faulty fuel pump
- Faulty camshaft position sensor (aallllssoo in the disty)
Anyone else have any ideas? Becca's getting jittery ready to drive her MX!!

Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE She's ALIVE!!
You can check for spark, pull a plug out and see if you're getting spark while turning.
I would double check timing, line up the timing marks and make sure they're correct
Make sure the VAF isn't sticking shut, open it up manually and see if that does anything
Usually all the issues like this are either timing or spark related

Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE She's ALIVE!!
OK, gotta get the MX back into my garage so can check the timing marks, but before we huff and puff pushing it, I wanted to see if maybe it was a faulty fuel pump.
Becca turned the key on while I listened at the rear of the car near the tank, and I couldn't hear anything.
Tried again, but with my ear against the quarter panel. Still nothing, other than the faint "click" of her turning the key.
Fuel Inj relay looks ok, in fact I think we replaced it just after we got the engine put together.

the fuel pump is underneath the back seat. take the bottom seat cusion off and the fuel pump is right in the middle.

Glad you told me that! lol I would have been out there dropping the tank! (Ford Mustang has no access from inside to the pump)
Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE She's ALIVE!!
Yeah, I'm glad you didn't do that. You'd be out there for a while

Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE She's ALIVE!!
ok, Becca and I got out in the hot car today and swapped the fuel pump.
Still no crank though.
When the starter spins the engine, the engine will occasionally increase speed as if some of the cylinders are firing, and some aren't. Seems like it WANTS to run, but it just can't keep enough consistent spark to keep things going. Becca said there WAS exhaust coming from the exhaust system, so I know at least some of the cylinders must be firing. No fire, no exhaust.
I'm going to check the ignition timing.

Timing is OK.
I'm running out of ideas here. ICM or Coil are the only other possibilities I can think of

Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE She's ALIVE!!
OK, using one of Becca's bobby pin, we accessed the OBD-I system, and read the codes....
08 = Mass Air Flow sensor
25 = Fuel Pressure Regulator control solenoid or circuit
26 = Solenoid valve (Purge control or circuit)
28, 29 = EGR valve fault (we knew this one be a code, because the KF is JDM, and has the EGR system deleted.
We also got one final code that's not listed in the Haynes manual:
41 = VRIS system 1
46 = VRIS system 2
The VRIS only affects WOT, so it wouldnt have any affect on the idle of the car. Right now, it's looking like Mr. MAF and Mr. Fuel Pressure Reg are the culprits.
