Re: Update for 92 mx3 with KF-ZE (Engine rotates, no start)

Post by cWs306 »

have you tested your coil? or the wires going to the disty. are you injectors firing? (take the disty out n turn the key n listen if they make a noise, have your ignition in the on position when doing this. it'll sound similar to a hissing sound) plugs are the right ones? if they arnt your motor will either run super super bad or just not start. cap n rotor all match up? your coil should read 11.5-18ohms. to test it, theres the 3 prong plug, test both outside prongs. leave the middle one alone. good luck, i just dealt with this same issue. :welder:

We replaced tensioner today and we got her started. She has a vacuum leak somewhere, but that is all that is wrong. She is alive and well. YAY!

I know! I have come a long way this year. I am all smiles. I would have gotten it done sooner if I hadn't had to have saved up the money and search for the parts. I have a video of my bf driving her so i will have to figure out how to post it on here. I will probably eventually do a worklog.

Hey guys,

Beccabob's illustrious fellow wrench hand and boyfriend here.

Ok, so the MX was doing fine aside from an erractic idle issue.

I had pondered if maybe the idle issue was attributed to improper ignition timing, so Becca started it up, and it ran fine. With the engine OFF, I loosened the disty bolts and rotated it a few degrees. Becca restarted it, and it idled worse, but turns out that was because I forgot to reconnect No. 5 plug wire, which had to be removed to access the lower disty bolt.

Now, I can't get it to fire AT ALL, even with the disty moved back to where it was. Engine turns over strong, but NO FIRE of any kind. I pulled the spark plugs and they're all soaked in fuel, so no fuel issue. Disty had just been replaced when becca bought it, cap seems OK, wires OK, rotor OK.

Any ideas? Because I'm absolutely STUMPED!

Unlucky! Check for engine fault codes. Check disty matches specs in the manual with a multimeter.

What about a bad Crank Position Sensor? Could that cause zero spark?

I believe so! Been a while since I've been using standard ecu but iirc that's one cause of no spark. Why has it been damaged?

Did a visual inspection and it seems fine. Gonna borrow a multimeter from work tomorrow and test the ohms.

If it isn't that, it can only be an disty prob. I've read where the K8s were notorious for disty igniters going bad. Although Becca's is a KF, it still uses a K8 disty.

its like my post just got skipped over and no attention paid to it. check your coil after ur crank angle when u get ur multimeter. the 2 outer prongs on the 3 prong plug, will read 11.5-18ohms. if it doesnt, its shot.

Edit, try pulling out your spark plug cable on cylinder 2 and stick it really close to one of the valve cover bolts and have becca turn it over. see if theres spark out of ur cable.

Waaaa.

If the coil is bad, the whole disty will have to replaced, yes?

no not exactly. you could change the coil there replaceable but you could also use this as an advantage and do a HEI(high energy ignition) mod to it..(best bet because its cheaper and its a very good/strong ignition to have)

Parts for the hei mod: MSD blaster 2 coil, a power tower with a male to female high energy wire and a 4 prong GM ignition module.
(i paid $95 for the coil, wire, tower, module)
