MSD universal Boost timing master

Post by wheelhop »

I searched and searched and searched. Has anyone installed one of these on a SOHC? There's a fat wire (blue) and a thin wire (yellow, blue line) running to the SOHC coil. The fat one is positive (+), correct? The MSD Universal BTM manual shows how to install onto a ford TFI ignition system on page 3. Is the SOHC ignition system basically the same thing as a Ford TFI system?

All you need is the tach signal. IIRC thats a yellow wire from the disty.

Are you boosting your SOHC?

Thanx for replying! Yes, I am, clicky.

I'm so stupid when it comes to piggybacking timing control. How do I set it up with just the tach signal? Doesn't the BTM still need to modify the timing? So I will have to wire into the spark signal to the coil somehow correct?

Here's how the BTM is wired into a ford tfi ignition system:

Image

On the BTM the white wire: "This is the trigger wire and connects to the points or electronic ignition trigger wire". And for a single coil tfi setup connects to the negative on the harness to the coil input. Red wire on the BTM: "Connects to switched 12 volts or coil positive. If a ballast resistor is used, it must be bypassed."

The positive (+) at the coil input is a tach signal source correct? So the above is all I have to do?

OK! After researching a LONG time, I think I found what I need. . .

Wiring For A 5462 On A Stock Ignition 1.8bpt - MSD Ignition Tech Support Forums

Mazda W/ BTM - MSD Ignition Tech Support Forums

The second one in particular. The guy got the btm to work in his 1993 MX-3 with the stock sohc coil and bpt swap using the tfi ford ignition instructions. But the tach didnt work. But after the tach adapter here was installed apparently it worked fine.

Another $50, but what can you do :) . . .

. . .Oh, and the guy in the second MSD forum link is on here: BuGS.
