I read a lot... Flashing Hold light... please read.

Post by thxone »

I have a 1992 MX-3 with the I4 and auto tranny. The guy I bought it from let me know about the issue with the tranny... said it is intermittent. This is in fact true. Ok, here goes...

Out of the blue the tranny will surge when it is about to shift into third and then the "Hold" light will flash. Once this happens the car will start out in first just fine, shift smoothly into 2nd and then it will hold second until I stop at a light or stop sign. If I park the car for the night and drive it the next day it will be fine... it will shift perfect in all gears and will not give you a hint that something is wrong. After a lot of driving it will again act up out of the blue... sometimes after I park it for a while. It does NOT overheat on the temp gauge, which IS working. If I am going slow enough it will kick down into 1st gear if I give it enough throttle. This issue has to be electrical... I mean when it is not flashing the "Hold" light, it shifts fine in ALL gears... could be heat? Low fluid? Bad filter? I dunno! lol I did just pick up the filter for it, trans fluid, a drain pan, a funnel and one paper towel. I will be changing the fluid and filter tomorrow... I will also be adding 24oz of Lucas trans stuff to the mix. My fluid is a brownish color but does not really smell burnt. Ok, I know this has been a topic many times... yes I searched all 21 pages of post... got some ideas and stuff but I need more from you all... Also, I am broke so a Shop is not an option just yet. ;)

Old wore out fluid can definitely cause issues. My MPV would surge/slip going into over drive on the hwy when hot. Once I changed the fluid tranny ran fine, no surging. So change the fluid/filter and see what happens. If you do have a problem I doubt Lucas will do anything.

Just found out it may rain tomorrow but I think I will work on it anyway... as long as I can power up the two ramps. Fingers crossed. Also... the fluid may be low... its only on the dip stick on one vertical side... like it was splashed on it.

I had slippage issue with the old '90 626 once. Would start to slip at 160, than 150, 140, 130, than I put in Lucas, dropped down to 110km/h when it slipped. Replaced the trans fluid, slipped once and never slipped again.

Typically: Flashing Hold = New Transmission

Yeah... I just hope the filter and fluid change helps for a little while. It has 141,000 miles on it... when the tranny isn't messing up it's a fun, peppy car. I put in a JVC CD player with a Metra wire harness that I got from AutoZone and it sounds great... it even matches my dash lights almost perfectly and it has USB on the front which I found out WILL charge your cell phone... my lighter socket doesn't work. I will let you all know if the filter and fresh fluid help things at all.

I didn't do the filter change... the guy I bought it from said it was done no more than a month ago. I added 12oz of Lucas trans stuff and for 4 days it hasn't messed up. I am currently looking for another auto trans though... one with no known issues. I now work at AutoZone so I will see if it is something I can get through the company and have a shop put it in. On another topic... I filled the tank up and have went about 50 miles and the needle for the gas gauge is just a little under the full mark... so much better on gas than my 4.0L inline 6 in my Cherokee.

Well it has messed up again... fluid looks good but now it won't shift from second to third again and the light is flashing hold. This is so annoying... I have yet to hit the half tank mark and I am at exactly 100 miles on the odometer... I am enjoying the MPG's. I noticed that when I turn the car on the factory radio makes a pop sound through the speakers one time and I have noticed that when I tap the brakes in park, the idle drops. I have also discovered that with the air off the idle is at like 600 in drive and there is a vibration... as soon as I hit the A/C button, the idle rises to 1,000 and the vibration goes away. The car drive fine either way, doesn't feel as if it will stall with the air off but something isn't right here. Have any of you had any of these symptoms? How was it rectified?

I found this on the web, going to diagnose this part as well, just in case.

"What is a throttle position sensor
The TPS sensor is a potentiometer type of electrical component. Rather than just being opened or closed like a switch, the TPS controls the circuit by varying its resistance in response to throttle position.

In most cases, this sensor will send a very low voltage back to the vehicle's main computer when the throttle plates are fully closed.

This reference voltage increases as the throttle plates are opened. Some manufacturers use inverse voltage readings for feedback.

A bad part can cause many problems in the vehicle's overall performance. Inaccurate data can cause transmission problems as well.

Some of the conditions related to TPS sensor problems can be no up shifting, fast up shifts, late or delayed shifts, and line pressure problems that control internal solenoids and torque converter clutch engagement. "

We use a kick down cable, so the ATX knows the throttle position directly.

Hold light -> trans is dying

That's pretty bad, especially for a 4cyl.

Seems good to me... somewhere around 28-30mpg, and that's in town driving, stop and go the whole time.

Can't be, unless you've got a small tank. 200miles on a tank is 321kms. My ZE would average about 450km on a tank, could hit over 500 once in a while.

When I filled it up it took just a hair more than 8 gallons... it was just under a quarter of a tank when I did this so I am guessing it's a 10 gallon tank.

After doing some reading on the web it says 13.2 gallons... so that takes me down quite a bit... maybe the low 20's per gallon around town. ouch. Where are they hiding those 3.2 gallons??
