My idle issues

Post by Dark_Rider2k3 »

Okay so first off in case you didn't know, here is my car (though i bet you do hahahah)

'92 MX-3 with Protege 1.8 BP swap.
Ford Escort intake manifold and throttle body
BPVR ECU
MX-3 wiring harness with VICS working and using the MX-3 FPR
All new vac lines, and new heater hoses.
Using MX-3 thermostat, rad fan switch, water thermosensor, and dash temp. sensor

BP rebuilt with:

Rock auto water pump
Rock auto engine bearings
NPR piston rings
PCI Timing belt/tensioner set
Apex lower seals/gaskets
ITM upper gasket set
New style lifters
NGK iridium plugs and new wires.

Kia transmission with OEM style flywheel/clutch and short shifter.

Now here are my idle issues. Most of the time when I first start the car it runs high. Usually around 2k RPM. Once fully warmed, it usually runs around 1.5k RPM. if I keep driving it it will eventually drop down to where it should be.

If I re-set the ECU, it will idle fine.

however, this isn't what bothers me. What bothers me is when I press down the clutch pedal. The Idle will drop a good bit when pressing down. Like.. it will go from 2k idle to 1.5k idle. And if the idle is where it should be (~900 rpm), when I press in the clutch it almost stalls.. and has stalled on one occasion with how low it goes).

Any ideals why these would happen? I have tried adjusting the idle (run car to warming, shut off, jump TEN and GND, start car again, adjust), and have the distributor timed right. The Idle adjustment screw, btw, is as low as it can go. And it does idle fine if I reset the ECU.

Just getting some ideas up. This hasn't much bothered me but is an inconvenience. I just hate to see it idle so high when I know it shouldn't, and hate how it drops with clutch engaged.

iam having the same issue. My car idles between 1.5k and 2k. my idle screw is in all the way. when i jump pin 10 and gnd the idle doesnt go down, it goes up. im thinking it has something to do with the cooling system. once it warms up i will be removing the hoses to the throttle body and intake manifold.

if you find anything update me please and i will do the same

When you adjust the idle jump 10 -> GND while the engine is running
then do the adjustment on the throttle body screw and then remove
the jump. If you dont like where it sets the idle just repeat till you
get it where you want it.

Did you use the MX-3 crank pulley or the BP one? MX-3 crank pulley
has both ribbed belts whereas the BP has one ribbed and the alternator
to waterpump belt is a V-belt type. If you used the MX-3 crank pulley
make sure you've timed the car to the proper mark as there are 2 marks.
Ie your timing might be out 10 degrees.

The MX-3 and BP thermosensors (2 wire) are identical in resistance ranges
so either is fine. The 1 wire located in the thermostat housing is for the
cooling fan.

You can try switching throttle bodies to a protege one, sometimes the IAC
valve gets messed up and doesn't work.

Just a few suggestions.. post back if you want further info after investigating
what it might be.
