What is the best Manual transmission fluid

Post by The_Kernal »

I'm putting in Royal Purple Synchromax. I asked around and was told manual tranny's use dex\merc 3. I don't care as much as what it used originally back in 93, but whats the best I can get that will do the best job in the gear box? Cost is NOT an issue. Any "know it all" out there wanna give this one a shot? What did it use originally? I know the motor came with Valvoline sae30...

Manual trans takes 75W90 gear fluid. I've used synthetic valvoline in mine.

There are lots of options on the market, bang for the buck use GM syncromesh, royal purple tends to work well in some applications but not others, but for our trans it depends more on where you live and the climate you are in most of the time, at hotter temps use a full synthetic 75w90 colder temps use a thinner oil. I am using redline mtl and it works pertty good. Its more a pick your preference thing when it comes to that stuff.

Hmm, ATF isn't gear oil, it's hydraulic oil...the exact same stuff that's in your power steering.

Yup. Check the manual though, it suggests it for the cold days. My reputable Mazda tech suggests it too.

I have run both ATF royal purp, MTX royal purp and also MTX amsoil extreme gear. Out of all 3 I would probably recommend the ATF if you live in a colder climate as it really does make the shifts alot easier.

The royal purp MTF and the ams extreme gear are Ok, but I would probably buy the amsoil syn syncromesh MTF if I did it again.

The GM syncromesh is a good bang for the buck tho as Newfie_Dan said.

Hmm, didn't know you can use ATF fluid. I do understand why, damn on those extremely cold days it's hard to shift.

I buy cheap s--- stuff 80w-90 and change it every summer. 5$ a bottle.

changing it more often is better than the best gear oil. I`ve heard all my life that gear oil is gear oil

how about if you finiky,

GEAR OIL lol + lucas oil stabalizer.
