I figured that was the case, but I've found that its connector is wired to a dash switch and when flipped the fan comes on, so the ecu must be reading it.....

Ah, you're right. The other one is the fan switch.

Personally, if it's the rad fan switch (one that is on the thermostat housing) or if it's the engine temp. sensor (one on the front of the block) then I doubt it's causing the car to not start.

You're totally right. The car needs basically nothing to crank. a battery and a starter. Pretty much everything else can be gone.

I stiiillll suggest battery terminals... wiggle wiggle.

hmmm.... Yea because it still isnt even starting today.

The kicker is, the fuel pump kicks on and last I checked I had spark at the plugs. sometimes it seems to hit a little but not enough to fire up.I've tried the terminals but I suppose another twist wouldnt hurt.

As a side note though, if the fan switch sensor is broken off and therefore disconnected, would it have any bearing on the dancing temp gauge? it never gets over 1/2 but I did find stop leak in the radiator, but flushed the engine several times and then replaced radiator, so I'm not totally believing it is clogged. Maybe air in the system?

Ok. So its alive again. The old vaf was dead and keeping it from starting at all.

The rx7 vaf being untuned was flooding the cylinders. After pulling the plugs and bumping the starter, plus a quick tune, it fired right up.

The coolant gauge was dancing because the temp sensor it links to has a tab that the sensor wire clips to. that tab is riveted to the sensor (or something similar) and is loose as hell. Engine vibrations cause it to lose signal.

Anyway, point is, the old beater lives again! And that on the SOHC, one needs not only spark/fuel/compression, but also a functioning (and properly tuned vaf xD )
