Has anyone drastically modified their interior?

Post by zreon »

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about doing some major interior changes to my interior. I was driving my bosses 09 DB9 and just really liked how the center console was right next to you, instead of below you with just a wimpy little arm rest. It felt like I was in a cockpit.

I'm going to be fabricating a new screen into my car for my carputer very shortly and am trying to get ideas of how to modernize the interior a little bit.

Here is the interior I am talking about. I realize I will never get anything even close to that, but a guy can dream right? Any ideas how to move my shifter up higher without making have a 3' throw? haha.

Anyone else do any big customizations to their interiors? If so, lets see them.

I have seen a couple "show" MX-3s with pretty neat interiors. Kevin Gettins, a previous MOCA member, was building a sick show MX-3 with a totally custom dash and center console, but it was a Hell of alot of work. It was so much work actually that he sold the car unfinished and quit the show scene.
I have thought about the same thing. The MX has a great, timeless exterior, and while the interior is nice too I would love to make some similar changes. There are a few snags though. (manual transmisions) You cannot really move the shifter since it is connected with shift bars or linkage. If it were shift cables you could move it, but Mazda was not a big fan of shift cable transmisions in the earl 90s I guess. That alone limits what you can do pretty severly. However, if you can make a MX-3 interior look 1/10 as nice as a Aston Martin you will become instantly famous. ;) lol

Hmm, I will have to try to find some of Kevin Gettins pictures. I was on cardomain last night looking at the mx-3s and there isn't really much as far as custom interiors go. Mainly just recovering the existing interior with a new material.

I'm thinking the only way to move the shifter would be to make some sort of pivot system. It would be a quite a bit of welding and customization, but it could be done.

My boss also makes custom choppers and I'm sure he would love to help me out with some stuff if I needed it. He created the aston martin bike that is now featured in the ohio motorcycle hall of fame. I'm gonna do a few interior renderings and see what I can come up with.

You could get Presso. The interior is a bit more to your cockpit feel.

Except the Eunos Presso's (+ Autozam AZ-3's) were only ever availible in RHD & I assume the OP is located in the US.

Well it looks like this will have to be put on hold. My job will be moving me out to California in about 2 months and unfortunately I will not be able to take my car with me. So I'm going to have to put her away in storage for a couple years.

On a positive note, I will be making a killer in California so when I get back. I can finally build my mx-3 up like I have always wanted. I'm definitely going to hang around the forums though. Gotta keep the ideas flowing in my head.
