Mikeinaus's 93 GS

Post by mikeinaus »

since ive had the car a little over a year and ive been doing alot of stuff to clean up the look of my car recently i thought id start a worklog.

a little history:
ive always thought mx3's were awesome and a little over a year ago it was time to buy my first car. not knowing anything about cars i went and bought the first mx3 i saw in my price range ($1000). the car was a complete mess when i bought it, the interior was absolutely disgusting. the carpet was covered in candy and mold, the sunroof was leaking, the headliner was falling off and the drivers seat had a big rip in it. but the body/paint was in pretty good condition. soon after i bought it i realized it was in worse shape then i thought. the exhaust was completely rotted out, the tie rods, ball joints and end links were about to fall off, the rear breaks were seized, one of the tires was completely bald and the radiator sprung a leak within a couple months. to make things worse the compression wasnt that great and it was only firing on 5 cylinders. i also managed to get 5 nails in 3 tires and the only one that made it unscaved was the bald tire :crying:

in september i moved down to vancouver and got into a small front end collision and destroyed my hood, put a nice crack in my front bumper, and mashed my rad support pretty well. it also managed to break the mounting brackets for the passenger side headlight so its all pushed in at a weird angle.

by november the bad compression and dead cylinder were getting so bad i was getting just over 200km to a tank of gas. with the help of solo_ryder and others on the forum i was able to pull off a motor/clutch swap. i was in a hurry to get it done and just replaced it with a k8, now i kick myself every time i get in my car as i see de's on craigslist all the time.

since then ive replaced a couple things to get the car into a more solid condition such as egr, coolant temp sensor, 2.25" magnaflow exhaust. to bring the look of the car back to life ive started repainted some panals. so far ive done the small strip under the hatch (paint was peeling) above the bumper, the spoiler (clear coat was peeling) and the mirrors (faded). today i finally smoked the tail lights and marker lights, and i start repainting my rims gunmetal. ill post pics of those tomorrow.

customizing:

my first custom mod was a 3 plug + usb power outlet i inset into the dash above the ashtray. shortly after that i painted the vents/accents blue, and installed el gauge covers to customize the car more to my style.

i also finally got around to getting a new headliner/customizing it to fit my aftermarket sunroof + covering it in vinyl
Image
i also made a custom floor for the trunk out of plywood covered in vinyl
Image
got my hands on a set of rear mud guards, painted them and installed on the car
Image

heres the car all polished up while i was painting the mirrors + freshly painted panel above rear bumper.

Wow. The car sounds like a disaster when you first got it. Seems like you're doing a pretty good job of getting it into shape. I look forward to seeing more. By the way, I like what you did with the 12V plugins.

really? there just ford escort rims, and there only 14's... should be easy enough to find a set wouldnt they?
i really want to replace them with a set of 16's but seeing as how i dont even have enough money to insure my car theyll have to do being painted for now. i have to pay off $1400 for that accident i was in, then i have another $600 in tickets before theyll let me insure it. since when is a too many passengers ticket more expensive then a D.U.I., how does that that make any sense.

Man, I like everything you do to your 3 haha. I've pretty much copied your interior choices and I've wanted to do the vinyl roof for ages now... looks like that might happen now I've seen yours! Is that moonroof retractable??

yeah it pops up and open back like the original sunroof. the only difference is the sliding mechanism and my switch for it is located near the dimmer switch.

the vinyl is a huge pain in the a-- to do. the headliner is kind of concave and you end up with a bunch of left over fabric. if you look closely i had to make a seam in the back. i had maybe 6"-10" of fabric left in the middle so i cut it and folded/glued it into a seam. it really didnt turn out nearly as good as i wanted it too. its also started to sag from the heat from the summer. if you load the thing with glue you might be alright but i think itd be easier/look better if you were to just go with some kind of felt.

i just finished spraying the floor from the rear seat all the way to the hatch with rubberized "undercoating" to try and give the car a bit more sound proofing and prevent rust. ill also be doing the wheel wells, and hopefully filling all the nooks and crannies of the car with some kind of sound proofing insulation. im also half way done "painting" my seats black with duplicolor vinyl and fabric dye. it takes alot of paint but the results are pretty good. ill post pics of everything once i get it all finished.

Are those the same tail lights as before?! They look so different after smoking them. How did you do it, nite shade, or something else?

yeah its just vht nightshade. the tails can take quite a bit of tint and still let the light threw. the side markers i went a bit too dark and the light isnt very bright. ive got a bunch of super bright leds in the mail to replace them and hopefully fix the problem.

i ordered these8 for my 3rd brake light and they just came today.Image there not even as bright as my 18year old factory bulbs, im very disappointed and hoping to get a refund. crossing my fingers that the other bulbs i ordered are brighter.

the rest of the leds finally arrived. they are garbage and i wouldnt recommend anyone to buy led bulbs off of ebay. my original bulbs are much brighter. for some reason they dont make enough light to illuminate red lenses but are ok for yellow and clear... i ended up using them for my turn signals, reverse lights and interior lights making 5 or 6 of the bulbs i bought good for nothing...

biggest news. my car is finally insured again! it hasnt been on the road since the end of may.from using my stereo while i was working on the car my battery was completely dead, i measured 4v from it when i tried to start my car. my girlfriend and i ended up pushing it up and down my alley 4 times trying to bump start it but it just wouldnt go. i ended up getting some random guy to give me a boost and it fired right up. ive done maybe an hour and a half of driving today and the battery is still pretty low. i havnt measured it but its having trouble starting the car so i think it might be on its way out.

if the weather is nice tomorrow ill give the car a good cleaning/wax and take some more pics.
