i know this will sound newbish but i need some tips at where i should shift for best gas mileage seeing how i didnt get an owners manual with this vehicle
and also, it idles differently every time i drive it
i had it set to about 700 RPM
but no matter what it will jump up to a thousand if i touch the accelerator and it will stay idling at 1000 or above.
i just need to save money cuz i am currently unemployed and my mom is paying for my gas
I've done some research, and found that accelerating fairly briskly (about 60% throttle), and shifting at about 2500rpm and cruising at 68mph gives the best mileage. In lower gears, you'll want to cruise at about 2600-2700rpm.
i am not sure if this is normal but in 5th at 60km/h i am at about 1950RPM
the guy i bought it from messed with the throttle to bring down the idle. now that i kinda have it set i only ever use the idle screw. but i only get like 260km to a tank.
your idle problems can be from a vacuum leak or your tps might not be set properly. i dont know offhand but 2krpm at 60km/h sounds about right. 2k-60km/h= 4k-120km/h which sounds pretty normal. our cars have smaller gears so they run a bit faster then others doing the same speed.
im also getting around 250km a tank. ive tried almost everything to fix it but the only thing ive got left to try is my alignment. bas fuel mileage can be caused from alot of things but faulty o2 sensors, vacuum leaks, wheel bearings, tire pressure, alignment and brakes being stuck on are usually the main ones. make sure all your fluids are topped up aswell. are you getting any cel codes?
you should be able to get a cheap socket set from canadian tire that should work for you. i got mine on sale for $50, its normally $150 and has lasted me threw a engine swap. wreckers and this forum are a good place to find used parts for fairly cheap.
just after getting the heatercore changed to the tune of $1129 i am big time broke haha
bout the car for $1700 and just about spent that amount in repairs
heater core is a beech though. Thats probably the worst thing I can imagine.
Still would rather swear and struggle though it, as it takes a week of work to pay for the mechanic to do it.

how many freakin hours did they charge you to do it? Hell I can do it in 4-5 hours total, mind you I know where to access everything and how to get the dash out pretty fast.
well this mechanic is actually a family friend and i have absolutely none of the tools to do a heatercore replacement. they actually had to order the heatercore in from toronto cuz they had 2 or 3 heatercores in but none actually fit cuz of the damn pipe lol, all the ones they had in the shop were straight pipe instead of the bent.
and i have looked everywhere for a repair manual and no one has one so my mechanic is getting another copy of the ones they have for me.
yeah but what I meant was 5 hrs x $120/hr (average rate for a mech shop in alberta) is $600 bucks labour, the heater core is no more than $50-60 bucks and coolant runs about $10-15, so where the hell did they pull $1129. At most it shoulda ran you $750 ish.
