It's certainly possible but I don't think it would run at all if the cam timing was off. He can keep it running if he keeps the throttle open.

I'm looking at a picture of MX3autozam's IM in the "Let's see your engine bays" thread and it has an elbow with a rubber cap on that hole. I'm guessing you had one too and it popped out.

For the record...I was the one that said intake air issue.

FTW!!!

this is why its good to have someone with you when trying to diagnose s---!!!! if someone else had been starting it in the parking lot and I had my head in the engine bay then I wouldnt have had to pay 75bux to have my car towed home....UGH!!!!

The timing belt being off is not as huge a risk as you may think spatial terror, the engine is non interference so even if the belt snaps it still won't hurt the engine. I replaced 1 about 6 months ago on a buddies mx-3 that broke when he was doing 100 km/h down the road when it broke. Engine fired back up no problem once I replaced the belt.

all i wanted to say right when he said theres a hole sucking air in on the mainfold is vacume leak. haha thats great it was that easy of a fix though.

and about the non interferance thing.
i was told that means that if your timing is off even one tooth you can screw the motor.
but thats pretty cool. makes me alot happier bout my mx
