Heated Mirrors idea, Help?

Post by tom_finn »

Ok so i searched heated mirrors and i know that you can get sum original manufacturers mirrors that are heated from the get go, but ive looked and there arent any i can find for a price i want to pay, so i was thinking and came up with this idea. why not make my own? i found a website, http://www.aerostich.com/heated-grip-kit.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that sells flexible heater grids for installing them on or under handles of vehicles operated in colder weather like snow mobiles for example. i would like to simply buy a pair of these and pull apart my mirror and attach it to the back of my mirrors and run the electrical line in with the rest of the door loom to a switch that would control the power to them and since they are high temp or low temp, that too. do you think this would work? is there enough room behind the mirror with all the working parts of the folding and the electrical movement aspects of the mirror? let me know what you think and if you have any ideas to further this project. thanks guys!

i have not seen the size on that heated element but i would assume if you can get a small enough one to place top an bottom of the mirror, i cant see a problem of one to fit in the middle as i have not taken the mirror apart on a 3.
as long as it runs on 12 volts should just be a fit and play job, but you will have to find a circuit that willtake the extra currt of the heaters

I have a set of power folding heated mirrors on my mx-3 that came from a JDM mx-6... that heating element looks very similar... it might work...

here's the only pic I have of the heated element in them:

these are the rest of the pics of the internals of JDM mirrors:

I honestly have never hooked mine up... I had considered tapping into the current defrost system for the rear window that way when you press it everything would defrost... but I was worried about overloading it... so I haven't hooked it up yet :?

You could use the trigger wire for the defrost relay and split that so it triggers a second relay to power the defrost element just make sure its around a 30 amp relay thats run off the battery fused at the battery with a 30 amp fuse and some 14 gauge wiring running from the relay to the heater elements power and ground wires., just need to run them into the doors and then up to the mirrors.

You're spot on with using the ideas for the grips and using the rear defrost circuit to power them. We talked about it for our Xterra's exactly a year ago. It's on my short list of mods, but it's not a high-priority mod, so I'm going to wait until the weather is warm before doing those. The hard parts would be removing the glass to mount the pad, and running the wires from the mirrors into the cabin.

Here's some info I had come across for doing this mod:

removing mirrors is not hard :D

Heat it up, and pry it out.
