High Beams Wont Work

Post by Habitat »

Hi everyone i just recently got a 1992 mazda mx3 gs and had it about a month now everthing on it is perfect except for the high beams. When i go to use them they simply just turn off the lights completely, they worked before but all of a sudden when i went to use them they went out, but my low beams work fine. I think its the wiring but don't really know what it is. What do you guys think?

try a new bulb, it's possible the high beam filament burnt out on both bulbs

Does it matter if you push on the signal arm to turn them on, or pull on it to 'flash' them? it could be a worn out relay/contact

Pull out a bulb, its super easy. Check the filaments.

Bulb removal: screw off white part, wiggle and pull out bulb.

Next to check is headlight relay

Both headlight bulbs burning the high beams and with the low beams working, at the same time?
Hmmm, I highly doubt it.
My money is on the combination switch.

Habitat: get a piece of wire. Connect one end to the positive terminal of the battery (make sure the other end doesn't touch the ground).
Now, look at the wires that go to one of your headlight bulb: you will have 3: blue, red, and red/white.
Touch the red terminal on one of the bulbs. Both bulbs should come on. Do the same with the red/white wire. Do NOT touch the blue wire, as it is the ground.
If your lights come on when you touch both the red and the red/white wires, your problem is either on your combination switch, or on the high beam wire, between the driver side bulb and the combination switch.

Everyone's quick to jump to the bulbs but I actually had the same problem with my one brake light. It would go on when the lights are on but when I braked it would go off, very strange. Turns out the 3rd wire for the 2nd filament had broken off and it wasn't completing the circuit, thus cutting power altogether. A new bulb harness did the trick. If the bulbs are fine check your harnesses/wiring too.

Inodoro got blatantly owned so many times, on so many different forums (and, of course, in real life), that he doesn't care anymore... (well, maybe a little... :P )

Anyways, Habitat, I'm happy you solved your problem.
