And before you say that the light only flickers, or is rarely on, check for codes anyway.

hey I got a buddy with a 1.8 v6.... He somewhat had the same problem.... we put another Distributor in it and it worked alot better...
this is what i would do:
1) check for codes... Read FAQ on how to. Then let us know
2) Change the distributor (if u got the coin)
3) Let ur car warm up and unplug the IAC plug... (under the throtle body) see what happens... let us know
4) check ur connections to sensors dizzy cap etc...
