DIAGNOSTIC can't get it to work

hi i have a 1996 mazda mx3 4-cyl 1.6 and i can't seem to get it to retrieving codes i did the ten and gnd jump turn on the key and the check engine light
just remain on

get an obd2 code reader and plug it in to the plug under the passanger side of the dash. f the diag port under the hood.

The reader has to support the ISO 9141-2 protocol, and not every reader does. There are 5 or 6 different protocols.

This one is specific to the ISO protocol, I have it, and it works great, you plug it into a laptop.

I used a few universal OBD-II readers and none of them would read the codes.

They already have. The 1996 model is OBD2 and as such there's no flashing light. you have to plug into the plug thats under your dash on the right side behind the radio. You need a code reader and for the cost of having a garage do it you can order a reader like the one mentioned in the above post.
