New member, but not new to mazda

Post by IukekiniProtege »

Hi everyone, my name is Justin and I live in New Hampshire. I joined here to hopefully assist in my project I currently have going on with my 2000 Mazda Protege LX. I am looking for mainly parts and info on the KL series of motors, and have seen quite a few discussions about KL motors in MX3s so i figured I would join here and see what is up.

here is a pic of the mentioned protege:

very nice.
Would it not make more sense to upgrade in the direction of the mazdaspeed protege? Sourcing that engine/turbo parts would be much cheaper, easier and make more power than a KL.

No, the MSP motor is weak and can't do more than stock boost for what I've been told, and it only makes 170hp @ 7psi. 10 is max on stock internals.

It's voted one of the top 10 cars under $10. Stated that it will take more than 200 hp. Dsport article.

well for me to use the msp motor and turbo setup i need, motor, side motor mount, tranny, axles, the motor, ecu, wiring harness, turbo setup including all the intercooler stuff. when all said and done i would have a 2.0 barely capable of 200hp(safe boost on stock motor is 10psi) and all for the same price as the KL swap I already have a good start for the kl swap. I would rather have the unique setup with a good base to build off from.

I'm sure you'll need pretty much the same for the KL. Mounts, ecu, tranny, harness.... maybe guage cluster, probably axels (pos custom).
How about a custom turbo kit for your current engine?

I will only need new passenger mount, dont need custom axles the one from the 2.0 Protege 01-03 ES work perfect, the shift linkage is the same, etc. I will not need more then i would for a 2.0 swap. Also my motor is currently burnign 2 quarts every 250miles so no plan to turbo the little guy and still, turboing the 1.6 will cost the same as a kl swap and have the same horsepower, where the kl will have room to grow and the 1.6 is maxed out without building it which requires even more custom stuff such as pistons, rods, etc...because no one supports the 1.6 ZM-DE.

Ya I like the MSP's, but even one I saw in a magazine somewhere was quite modified and only hit 270fwhp.

yeah that was one of the members over at mazdas247 he was in modified mag, his wasnt built for power as it was show, but yeah still takes a lot for the 2.0 to even come close to the ze, and the 1.6 is even worse. the swap has been done atleast a half dozen times in canada, and they have a good write up on the stuff needed.

The Protege is a weird car. I see them around town and I ask myself "Why are these so popular???". But then I see one like that ^^^ and I'm like..."Oh...that's a nice car."

that's a good lookin car man. It's gonna be sick with a ZE in it.

yeah i mean, by no means am i pretending to be an expert swaping in the ze into the protege, just have spent three weeks researchings, reading on; the mazda forums, probe talk, mx6.com, clubprotege, mazdas247, and tons of google searching and calling around, i hope it goes easy enough, me and my group are no strangers to weird swaps or just normal swaps, so this should be good. Other then my car we have a stroker 2.4l "4G63" going into a talon tsi, a race prepped 4G63 going into another talon tsi, a frankenstein K24/k20 going into a CD5 accord, and thats after doing a h22 swap into that accord last year, plus the 1.6 in my car is the second 1.6 and the third tranny, and thats jsut to start the list of what we do.
