To reduce the throw of your shift, getting into gear quicker. They are engineered to have a reduction of travel up to 40%, IIRC.

The adjustable versions can reduce even more - up to 80% (pacesetter).

It made nice sound cause guy's muffler bearings were adjusted just right. Go to local parts store and ask them for some, they're kinda expensive

I haven't seen a pacesetter for sale in a couple of years.

It seems some people have had luck with the generic ones but remember you get what you pay for! My B&M was $150 shipped and pacesetter was $100 shipped when I bought them. If you can find the pacesetter I would highly recommend it since you can adjust it lower than the B&M. I know Jesse has a TWM short shifter and is happy with it.

maybe ebay or google...

I have a 10$ Ebay shifter w/ brozeoil bushings. It's very crisp, and when I put my weighted CF Mazdaspeed knob on, it makes a very "slight" clicking noise when shifting. Shifting takes a little more effort, so people not used to it may be thrown off, but most find it to their comfort. It's precise. I got the type w/ the ball end, not the cylinder.

A tine is being caught in my clutch assy so my clutch clicks. It doesn't sound cool at all.

Short shifters are not only shorter on top, but longer under the pivot point, changing the leverage. That way you don't have to move the knob as much to shift. I think it is an upgrade that a person would do, if you find that you aren't shifting fast enough. I can shift so it sounds like an automatic, with no RPM lag.
You can drill about 1¼" out of your shift knob, and extend the threads, so you can screw it down, reducing your throw for free, or you could send me yours, and I'll do it for you.
The best time to do it is when your bushings start to go out. When you put in bronzoil bushings, and short shifter, it feels like a new car. You have to get used to how precise it is, and the slight extra effort to push it.
