Ford Duratec 3.0 in a MX3

Post by ionic1000 »

While helping my cousin with his oil change in his Ford Escape I noticed that his engine looks very similar to our K series engines. Could a swap be possible? Has anyone ever heard of anyone doing it?

I am sure it can be done if you had the money. But why? KLZE makes the same amount of power with a smaller displacement.

I assumed (but I have been wrong before) that a increase in liter size would contribute to an increase in power displacement. Not to mention it seems cheaper to obtain a Duratec in comparison.

The Taurus/Sable/Escape version uses roller finger followers (RFF) instead and produces 201 hp (150 kW) at 5900 rpm with 207 lb·ft (281 N·m) of torque at 4400 rpm.

KLZE is 200hp 165lbs tq.

The displacement probably gives abit of torque as it has lower compression as well.

KLZE parts arent that much cash, you just use DE/K8 parts and its not to bad.

My mom has a 3L duratec in her Taurus, the motor is ok, runs quiet and has decent power on the low end, I am not a fan of the composite intake manifolds though. I had to change spark plugs and wires on it and I had to take apart the entire intake mani to do it. You are right in the fact that it does look alot like the K series motor, I think that it had a timing chain though and it was abit larger of a motor dimension wise.

How about the 2.5L duratec motor out of a SVT contour? I would rather see a swap like that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Contour

Makes 200hp 165lb tq.

Cool looking motor, I like those SVTs

I remember this coming up a few times over the years.
The ZE is a bolt in upgrade, and the duratec would take enough fabbing that you could turbo a DE for the same time, money, and effort.

It's a tranversly monted 60* V6....there's only so much varience to that design to make them look different between manufacturers.

The Mx-3 was designed to take a K-series Mazda V6 or a B-series Mazda 4cyl...that's it that's all! Anything else is custom, and when you involve custom work, you involve $$$.

Why would you even bother with a SVT 2.5, it's the same power with alot more costs involved with installing it.

Why put a motor in that isn't going to net you more gains than whats easily available to drop right in? Only motors I would think about besides BP and ZE/DE is the FE3, and the sr20det. IMO rotaries and other 6's or 8's won't fit in our engine bay to make it worthwhile. You may be able to adapt a rotary to a fwd platform that could fit easily enough, but it will take a bit of money to get the same power as from one of the engine mentioned above.

The engine that I was particularly looking at was the 30 DAMB because it had significant hp and torq increase over the KLZE.

Ford's standard DOHC V6 is known as the Duratec 30. It was introduced in 1996 as a replacement for the 3.8 L Essex engine in the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. It has 3.0 L (2967 cc) of displacement and produces between 200 and 240 hp (150 and 180 kW). The same engine is used by the Jaguar S-Type, Lincoln LS, Mazda MPV, Mazda6, Mondeo ST220 and many other Ford vehicles. It is essentially a bored-out (to 88.9 mm) Duratec 25 and is built in Ford's Cleveland Engine #2 plant. A slightly modified version for the Ford Five Hundred entered production at the Cleveland Engine #1 plant in 2004.

It has an aluminum engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. The cylinders are lined with cast iron. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods and an assembled cast aluminum intake manifold.

There are two key versions of the Duratec 30:

* DAMB - The Lincoln LS and Jaguar AJ30 versions have direct-acting mechanical bucket (DAMB) tappets. Output is 232 hp (173 kW) at 6750 rpm with 220 ft·lbf (298 N·m) of torque at 4500 rpm.
* RFF - The Taurus/Sable/Escape version used roller finger followers (RFF) instead and produced 201 hp (150 kW) at 5900 rpm with 207 ft·lbf (281 N·m) of torque at 4400 rpm.

I've heard somewhere that the ford escape front end is really similar to the newer 626's, which means that you might be able to work something our if you used escape mounts. Also, the I4 escape axles will fit our trannies without mods according to some people on probetalk.

And I have to say, the duratec 30 is a good sounding motor, my parents' escape has it and while it doesn't compare to the ZE, it still sounds mean.

And a little side note, the Noble M400 supercar uses the duratec block with twin turbos and makes 425hp and 390 lb/ft of torque. :P

So you gonna get a motor from a LS lincoln or a Jag? I doubt that.

in my opinion the only thing great on those engines is the coil on plug setup!

Well if you want to give it a try, go right ahead, but no one has done anything like that before, so if you want to be the first, best of luck, but you're on your own. We can't help you, not because we wouldn't want to, but we couldn't since there is absolutely no information on that kind of swap.

It's a nice though but like others have said, I would be rather turbo'ing a DE or something instead. There's just too much work in doing such a custom job in our cars. If our cars had massive engine bay space it would be different, but we don't.
