REALLY HIGH RPMS FOR LOW SPEEDS

Post by barefootmx-3 »

I recently bought a 93 Mazda MX-3 GS CS and my car is running at really high rpms. When i am at 5th gear im running at 2'00 rpms and when im on the interstate going near 60-75 mph im around 4500 to 5000 rpms or even higher. is this normal or is there something that i can do to bring these down?

at 60 you should be right at 3000 to 3400 at 75 you should be around 4 ish its just the way the tranny is geared, real low i believe

to clear up some info in 5th at 25-30 mph im at 2000 rpms and like i said 60-75 mph im at 4500 or higher. its a manual and its a little slow off the line but when it carches at like 4500 5000 rpms it like a whole new car and picks up speed fast. (in geaers other than 5th)

well yeah if you just have the k8 it does not really have any low end at all its all top end. cause mine catchs around 3500 and starts going. and here this might help you out on the idle speed you can adjust it http://www.mx-3.com/manuals/showimg.php ... B2-008.gif

If the clutch is slipping, it would be high, but at 120km/h (75mph) I sat at 4000rpms, and that's the norm. There's ALOT of threads questioning this.

You can change the 5th gear alone, or swap to a Mx-6/626 trans that has a taller 5th and a taller final drive, but the tranny is geared to match the powerband of that motor. Reving high does not equal poor fuel milleage, and putting in longer gears may actually reduce milleage by making the engine work harder, but no one has tried either.

Funny tho, those Mx-3 gearboxes top out at 240km/h, yet a Honda RSX K20 w/the 6-speed tops out at 190km/h....

The motor and drivetrain was designed to be comfortable at those speeds. It's totally normal, and will not harm your motor at all.
