I just recently acquired my ’93, when I drove it home it had a bang coming from the rear of the car so loud it sounded like a brick bouncing around in the back of an empty dump truck. When I investigated, I found that the rubber/metal mount that attaches the strut to the body of the car had rusted and separated on both struts. This allowed the top of the struts to move around freely. When I jacked up the rear of the car, I was able to move the wheel assembly around, but was unable to see what was loose. I confirmed the problem by pulling the interior panels, which gave me an unobstructed view of the mounting point. This may not be your problem, but may be worth checking out.

sounds like what mine was just like.
went to do the struts and the same kind of sound being made was from a snapped spring.
i'd definatly check the spring out
