Stock Swaybar Sizes...
K, I know there's a stock 20mm and 22mm swaybar, but what came in what?

Re: Stock Swaybar Sizes...
i'd like to know. I just ordered a whiteline bar its 22mm solid. I am just curious to what stock is. I am pretty sure its 2mm but its hollow so the whiteline bar is an upgrade

Re: Stock Swaybar Sizes...
IIRC Yoda said that the 96 mx3 swaybar was solid, whether it was 22mm or not I am not sure. But I have always been keeping a eye out for one of those at the junkers
Re: Stock Swaybar Sizes...
I have a 1996 model and the swaybar was 20.XX mm when it was measured...

Canadian model I assume..Flyer wrote:I have a 1996 model and the swaybar was 20.XX mm when it was measured...
Can you check to see if the bar is solid?

Wasn't sure, might check if and when I change tires over...solo_ryder wrote:Canadian model I assume..Flyer wrote:I have a 1996 model and the swaybar was 20.XX mm when it was measured...

Besides, assuming equal diameter and material, and the walls are thick enough, the hollow sway bar should be stronger/take more punishment than a solid one. Lighter too...it's an engineering thing...

Re: Stock Swaybar Sizes...
From Yoda - "Since you are in Canada it could be 20mm or 22mm If it is mid 95 or older then it will be a 20mm. It could be a 20mm or 22mm on the GS from this point to the sometime early in '96 and just before they stopped importing the car in '96 it is more likely that there will be a 22mm rear bar."
They never put the22mm on American cars, but all pressos, and AZ-3s had 22mm, as well as Euro-spec MX-3s. They said it was a liabilitly in America (because we're sue-happy).

Re: Stock Swaybar Sizes...
Shear stress in a round bar is defined as:
Stress = Torque * radius / J
J = Polar moment of Inertia and is a property of the shape of the bar...ie. solid vs. hollow.
So as J increases, the stress decreases.
J = (pi/2)r^4 for a solid bar,
J = (pi/2)(OD^4 - ID^4) for a hollow pipe.
J is greater for a solid bar and thus a solid tube experiences less stress than a hollow one of the same OD.
Hollow is not bad, but Solid is more gooder.

Re: Stock Swaybar Sizes...
well hows this
I just ordered the whiteline 22mm solid bar from Corksport yesterday, it should be here soon. Once I get some endlinks I will put it on. And at that point I will measure the bar that came off my 93 GS.
oh and btw I need endlinks..wytbishop..you wanna make some more solid ones...I will buy

If you want them right now I will sell you my set. I haven't used them yet as I am waiting to install more or less an entire new suspension.
PM me and we'll talk.
