[GI] Lexan hatch windows

Post by cjthor »

Well since the PDX MX3 club needs four hatch windows made I am thinking about investing in a couple more if there is interest. I am TOTALLY guessing at a price....maybe 400 each? Id love to get a ten pack made. These would be an exact replacement in size for the OE hatch glass.

For general interest...my hatch was broken into a few years ago and the dealer wanted $1800 for that piece of glass. My insurance company said no way and wanted to write the car off instead until I found an aftermarket piece for $800.

$400 for a lexan window would be a nice alternative to having your car written off.

I am possibly interested, it all depends on how it looks. Considering that no one knows what the MS window looks like, but it seems like you've got some good ideas about getting it done, even sparked my interested with the mention about getting it professionally vacuum formed. Of course I'd like to see the end result, but what I'm looking for is a hatch window that doesn't obviously look like it's a Lexan replacement, and there's no guarantee that the MS one will look better, similar, or even worse than the one you guys are making. It's a low priority part, so I'll be keeping my eyes on your progress ;)

One of my main priorities for my build is to have a "sleeper". That's why I got fiberglass instead of the Carbon Fiber hatch. I really want it to look like regular glass. I'm going to have mine tinted, too. I was impressed that Ice Racing's didn't look obviously like poly, even though he bent it in place, and riveted it. Usually, the poly dimples around the rivets.
If they're vacuum formed, they should look normal.

The only issue I can think of is scratch resistance. So, I'm going to tint mine on both sides. 3M makes a tint for the outside. I'll do very light tint on both sides. I'm doing my side windows, too. The material we're using is Markalon, which is the best for this application, and will hold up well. Take a look at Ice Racing's worklog.

If it can hold up to an ice scrapper...and/or the wipers....
