No spark from coil

Post by JCS »

Tried starting my car today and got nothing. Pulled a plug wire, no spark. Pulled another, no spark. Pulled the coil wire off the dist. and laid it next to the strut tower bolt. Cranked and got 1 spark the very first time then absolutely nothing for the next hour and a half of working on it. Checked the coil with a meter and it appears to be a little high on the primary (think 1.2) but within specs on the secondary. Any ideas on what to do next?

Had my HEI module tested today and it turned out bad. Replaced it with another. Checked for spark and it sparked. Hooked it up to the dist. and tried starting the car and nothing. Pulled the coil wire again to check for spark and I had none. I thought I could smell fuel but my friend said he couldn't. We listened for the fuel pump to energize and he couldn't hear anything.

Basically now it's a No Fuel/No Spark scenario. Would a bad distributor be the culprit? I'm not sure how this all ties together so any help is appreciated.

Also, what 10amp fuse are you suggesting I check?

i think there is an engine fuse by your left foot.
check the names and one will make sense.
i would bet $100 that the fuse blew with the other failure you had

i was on vaction 500 miles from home when my car had died as I was about 2 miles from the hotel.
I had no spark but it would try to crank.
Heard the fuel pump
i replaced ignition coil, igniter and disty ($400 ish)
then found it to be a 10 cent 10amp fuse.
At least the parts I had replaced were all a bit old so I didn't feel too bad

I think i found later that my ignition module needed to be placed better in order to dissipate heat

I did check the fuses in the interior box near my left foot. I think there's a 15amp engine fuse there. It's good.

I just don't know what would have caused me to get no spark and no fuel like that...

If your coil, disty, HEI is goot... I mean, good, I would suspect the ECU

Alright, new situation. I AM getting fuel. Just no spark.

I blew the new ignition module after I hooked it up. I don't know how. I got a spark until I hooked the coil wire up to the dist. and then nothing. Got it checked and it's bad. Could it be the distributor that's bad?

Aside from blowing my HEI module twice, I jumped TEN and GND and got code 2...

Could have told you that it was the Disty but I was alittle late. Same thing happened to my car a week ago. Just put the disty in two days ago. What happened was I doubt it was your actual distributor that was the problem. It was most likely the stock ignition module inside of the disty blew. I bet when you did your HEI mod you didn't completely by-pass the stock module. Then when it went, you figured it was the disty. Which is no big deal bc you would have had to replace the disty anyway because nowhere sells a stock ign. module. lol. I got a disty with 10,000 miles on it for 50 dollars off of ebay. Some company called Irens Auto Salvage or something. Great place, the disty works amazing (more torque). If anybody wants to stock up on their distys I would recomend it.
