B5 engines

Post by aufgehdraht »

so I'm thinking about putting a b5 engine into my 94 mx3 that has a b6-de thats a 5 speed as well i know the miata b5 has the same clutch what about engine mounts, ecu, and i think the ignition is different as well but have no idea i can't seem to find any detailed information on the az-3 its out of. if any one knows or know where to look it would be greatly apreciated

yea by 5 horses and a couple of foot lbs and why would i wanna do what every one else is doing when i can take a smaller engine get better gas mileage and have about the same amount of power? especially since the block is lighter from what i've read on it it's more durable and it's supposed to be the exact same everything?

I see now that I look :)
______Hp/Tq
1.5 ~115/100
1.8 ~127/114

Not a bad option. Might be hard to find parts. Everyone knows what an escort/miata/protege are... everyone will look at you strange if you start talking about AZ-3's....

I assume the DOHC version is your goal?

Best of luck, though :)

If you want to get the advertised HP/Torque out of B5ZE - you will basically need the engine, wiring harness and the ECU. It will definitely be a wiring nightmare....

You can also try the Z5 engine out of a 95-98 protege (which is basically plug'n'play -mechanically)- you will atleast have ready access to parts/ECU/wiring diagrams etc - then you can swap in the cams or pistons or something from the B5 to give it the edge.....

Rebuild the b6 w/ higher compression pistons and stronger rods! Get a management system and see the good mileage+better power!(Then you can turbo in the future for LOTS of power!)

GL if you do accomplish the b5 swap.

i've never rebuilt an engine so not quite sure how to do it however i'm planin on putting an engine in it then rebuilding the one thats in there as long as i didn't mess up the block somehow anybody know of a how to for rebuilding i understand the main concepts just not sure of the details for it also wouldnt the ecu on my car plug into the b5 engine since its the same year and model just a different stroke on it? also where would be a place to start at looking what i need to do to the b6 engine to put it up to about 200horses i want to end up with like 160-175 bhp goin through a 6 speed of some sorts any six speeds that would work well with that engine?

Swapping the B5-ZE in place of the original B6 is pretty much plug and play since they are identical engines externally. How every you would want only a '97-'98 B5-ZE from a AZ-3 or Presso the earlier one and the ones is in the 323 and Lantis were lower HP. I do know of a couple B5-ZE swaps and they are pretty much equal to a BP-DE swap. You have to remember that the BP-DE were the center of several lawsuits around the world where Mazda had inflated the power specs and had to lower the output specs of the BP-DE twice from 127hp down to 125hp and finally down to 122hp before switching to the FP & FS engines
