Just installed a USB port

Post by Jutzi420 »

Check this, got sick of not being able to charge my phone in my ride. and since I cut out my cig-adapter long ago I figured I might as well chop a usb adapter right into the dash.
I chopped the s--- outa a kensington usb adapter and soldered some wire leads on. Then I cut a bezel out of a black plastic parts bin divider with a dremel, step bit, and utility knife.

Bigger pics at the flickr links if you wanna check 'em.

That's pretty awesome, I should do something like that so I can charge my Blackjack II. I use it for my GPS and if i forget to charge it overnight it dies on me during the day.

That looks like it came straight from the factory! Very nice work.... very professional looking. By the way, on your HVAC controls, are thoughs euro styles (like the gauges), or did you just paint those?
If you fall, then get back up........Luck favors the prepared

I thought the HVAC control thing was just a cover like what you see on eBay.

That USB does look very nice. The fancy hazard button looks cool too!

Yeah, the HVAC controls were that limited run that speedhut did way back. They light up blue, I'm pretty sure the ones offa ebay don't light up. As far as hooking up the usb it's dead simple. I cut off the plastic around the end of the adapter just to save a bit of space. you could hook it up without even going that far. The metal button in the middle is the lead you wanna power and the bars on the side are the ground. You could just tie into the circuit the cig lighter is on. Mine hooked up to my fused stereo / lighting circuit tho.

That's what the adapter looked like before I demo'd it.

BTW, USB is 5v (500mA) so don't try splicing it directly into your 12v system ;)

Yea, you can't just take a port and hook your ground and 12v up to it. You gotta use a vehicle adapter and leave the circuitry inside it intact.
