oil light

Post by mitmaks »

My oil light is on. Oil level is not low. It was low a while ago and light went on, Ive added some oil and light went out. Now the light is on for no reason as level is where its supposed to be.

It's not an oil level indicator it's an oil pressure indicator. If it stays on when the car has lots of oil there's a decent chance you have low (or no) oil pressure...or the sending unit is fried. Put a new oil pressure sender in there and see if it goes away. If it doesn't you need an oil pump.

put a mechanical one on and read the pressure, the lights are pretty useless, you can fry your motor if the pressure is low.

Well then I would not run my engine again until I could verify oil pressure. Cuz a seized engine sucks donkey.

um, I don't think so. I've got an autometer oil psi guage. it came with it's own sending unit. Just plug and play, no light in the dash anymore, but a dial guage is far more useful.

The 92 Manual says a K8 should be 28 psi at 1000 rpm and 48-71 psi @ 3000 rpm.

I went and got a mechanical gauge with sending unit. Changed oil and light is gone. I will see if it will come back and check pressure then. If not Ill just return gauge. Maybe oil change is all it needed.

Ever heard of "shimming" the sensor for rising the preassure?

It's all about the little spring that squezze the oil while it passes throught. If that spring don't squeeze enought, then oil preassure's stay low.
