Horsepower

Post by mdgain »

I am looking to get more horsepower out of my 94 1.6 DOCH. Without an engine swap or a total rebuild, how can I get 40 to 50 more ponies? Is it even possible?

Question: Do you want to turbo your car? If not, then nope, not possible to get 40-50hp gain.
You could swap out cams from a 90-93 Miata, you might be able to gain something from them. Search about that, I'm not sure if there is much info about it, but theres more than I know...

Also, if you do want to turbo, you can use an exhaust manifold from a 323 GTX or a Mercury Capri xr2? (the 4-cylinder turbo version, not the V8 mustang verion). Again search info about those, you'll find more info than I can give.

Horsepower is expensive. To make 50 more HP you need to change compression, change displacement or change volumetric efficiency. That means either change the pistons, which is a rebuild, bore the cylinders which is an even more expensive rebuild, or turbo/super charge which is really expensive.

You can get 10 - 20 from intake/exhaust, but a good exhaust system is still a few bucks.

Start with a good tune up then work on the intake and exhaust systems while you save for a BP.

I wish my intake/exhaust gave me 10-20 :(

I am a firm believer that modifications give you a PERCENTAGE increase. I'm thinking maybe 5-10% (10% being a godly intake/exhaust setup)

In a higher HP car, you'd see wider gains. At least, that's my conclusion.

Miata camshaft swap is the best way to increase power. I have a set of camshafts that are still waiting to go in my B6.

But the camshaft swap also relies modifying the flow of your intake/exhaust, which I have already done.

camshaft/intake/exhaust will (I HOPE) add prolly 15 seahorses to my car in total. Giving my car a "theoretical" 120HP (if my car was having a "Hey I just rolled off the assembly line!" day)
Other than that, you're looking at everything else wyt said. I enjoy repeating what other people say, but meh. It's early.

Without an engine swap or turbo the best way is to bolt it ontop of another vehicle like a truck then drive the truck. You would have a no swap 300ish horsepower Mx-3.

Thanks guys. Factory specs on my engine say 105 HP, I am just trying to get to 150.

What about a performance chip?

Performance chips do nothing except fool the car into dumping more gas into the combustion chamber giving it a false improvement.

Anything less than a standalone on the car is not improving power or fuel economy.

The cheapest (& easiest) way to gain some power is to put in a GTX or GTR BP turbo engine from Japan. The GTR is superior and more rare.

There is no supercharger for the B6 either. There is one for the BP Miata engine but its also several thousand off of flyinmiata.com. Turbo > Supercharger on small engine.

would improve throttle response and fuel efficiency a little...generally a good idea for basic maintenance...but no horsepower gain associated with spark intensity.

honestly there is no way that your going to bump hp with out spending a good amount of money. just go for the swap or do turbo thats really all you can do

I imagine it'll take ALOT of work/$$, but Bo0sted_Rafi proves that it can be worthwhile.
