wanna see what ebay pistons look like?

Post by npspears »

Well, I emailed the guy selling the engine kit for the 1.6L DOHC today, to see if the valve stem seals come with the gasket set (they do) and he also emailed pics of the pistons (didn't ask him too, probably trying to sell his product).

Is it possible to tell if pistons are good quality just by a picture? I doubt it, but doesn't hurt to ask. Not sure what that blue spec is all about. What do you guys think of these pistons?

I can't tell you the quality of those, but here's mine that I just pulled out of a 1.6 DOHC B6 if you want to compare:

to the OP, those look like generic factory replacement cast pistons....good enough if you want to be stock, or mildly upgraded.....

that blue dot is just a factory quality control mark.(they mark them to show that they have been looked over...)

Hey Sev...

Are the stock slugs fully cast? Do the not machine the valve reliefs?

When I say cast, I mean 'NOT FORGED'.

all pistons are machined on the sides, and top.

and some on the bottom too :)

as well as the wrist pin bore.

I hope that helps.

Yeah I understadn that, but I'm thinking that carbon is going to build up fast on the rough casting surface in the valve relief area. I would have though that factory pistons would have the valve reliefs machined.

nah, it doesn't really build up that much faster man....think of the head surfaces, they aren't machined either...
Don't get me wrong though...polished pistons and combustion chambers 'for the win'.

sadly, I haven't even started secondary education :) would be cool though eh? I'm going for machining. I could custom do everything :) I just couldn't weld, or forge, or cast.... but I would definately have connections :) I hope to have my own shop one day and run a business out of it with all those options. Thats after I get my mechanical engineering degree :)

well hopefully in five years you will still be into mx-3's so you can make some custom stuff for us. But if you didn't make stuff for us, I'm sure you'd be a BIG help in other ways.

Well you can go through ebay or go through Importperformanceparts.net I'm making my order monday! I'm going with the OEM engine kit + HV oil pump + Toga bearings = :D The total comes to $488 + shipping, but I know I will receive a good quality product. I just don't trust ebay when it comes to engine internals  Good luck on your build man!
