4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
So I've been searching around, and came to nothing conclusive...
Concerning the 4 cyl, I know that in 94 we switched from a box type MAF to a clyndrical one. Are they interchangeable? What alternatives do we have? I read something about a 2nd gen RX7? If no one answers by next weekend, I'll go a scrap yard and start pulln' 'em and seeing which connectors fit where.

Re: 4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
you probably already came across this but i'm assuming that they aren't interchangable. The 92-93 had the OBD1, so it is implied that that connector would have changed too when it switched over to OBD2 in 94.
I hope this helps in some way.

MAF are hot wire cly shape. ( i have a habit of confusing the two)
yes the 94 switched from a box type VAF in the 92-93 models to a MAF hot wire setup.
No they are not interchangeable
for the 92-93 models Mx-3 the typical upgrade is the 2nd gen RX-7 VAF (just to note they also come with a MAF found in the early 90's model..)
u can also use a Protege LX VAF butt there the same size.. so why got go with the larger RX-7 VAF with has the same connections as the sohc VAF .. they are a some on here that had to calibrate the rx-7 vaf to work decent with sohc... i had to do that myself..
Here is a compassion of a Protege LX VAF and a 2nd gen RX-7 VAF hope this helps out..

Re: 4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
Thanks guys
Exactly what I was looking for.
-VAF are trap door box shape.
-MAF are hot wire clyndrical shape.
-The VAF in the 93 is not interchangable with the MAF the 94+ models.
-The 2nd gen RX7 (years 1986-1988) VAF (not the MAF from later models (years 1989 -1992)) fits onto the VAF Mx-3 models.
-The aformentioned VAF fits on the SOHC, but may require some calibration. I would assume then it doesn't on the DOHC...
-Protege LX VAF fits on the VAF MX-3 models, but its pointless, but if you blow yours and can't find an MX at the scrap yard, grab a protege one.

Re: 4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
I still feel this is incomplete.
Is true only for the SOHC?
What modification is required to make the RX-7 VAF operate correctly?
If MAF is Mass Air Flow Sensor, what is VAF?

Re: 4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
i have read this post and i even feel this was unfinished. i am in the possition where i'll be going to the boneyard in the next day or so looking for a VAF. if i'm going to find an rx7 one then i'd like to know what i'm going to need to make it work. i know we should let sleeping dogs lay but i'd like to get some help with out a new topic. and a sticky probably isnt a bad idea either

Re: 4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
The VAF (trap door) are interchangeable, but require tuning (see CP)
The MAF, no idea.
Best idea: Go standalone.

Re: 4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
life is so much easier with a standalone but only if u know some local that's a pretty good tuner or u can do it yourself.
otherwise its not worth the effort..
i need to do a write up on this stuff one of these months

Re: 4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
So with that gigantic box in the way how do you fit a short ram intake on the pre-1994 1.6L MX-3? The pipe from the engine ends at one of those VAF boxes and goes directly to the air filter box. Unless you can replace it with a smaller one, the short ram intake would have to be right on the end of the box, am I right?
I'll post a pic of my engine bay to show my dilemma later.

Re: 4 cyl MAF sensor compatibility
why shot ram? I'm just using a cold air I got for 50 bucks off Ebay and it does the trick just fine.
Now, my question is do you have to calibrate it with the stock I4 or is this just for the BP guys? The vaf seems to run just fine for me with no calibration.
