Question about Flywheel, do I need a new one

Post by The General »

Ok so a little while ago. A guy on the forums caught sight of my flywheel being rusted/brown and said I should get a new one. Ok so I was just going to get mine resurfaced, problem was, my friend and I cant get the thing off. So Im wondering if its even worth it or I should even do it. Heres some pics of my flywheel

Put it in the back of a truck and drive over to the nearest independent automotive shop and ask one of the techs to put their 1/2" impact on it. If it doesn't come off then, You can try running it, but it'll eat a clutch disk in no time. You'll have a very poor feeling clutch and it'll be destroyed very quickly.

breaker bar + cheater bar = win ;)

Actually I guess that would kinda suck if one of those bolts broke. :p

It's difficult to secure the flywheel with the engine out and the tranny separated. I expect this is why he's having so much trouble getting it off. You can probably rent an electric impact wrench. It might work, but they're less powerful than pneumatic.

Well, I don't know if this helps or not. But when I did it, I just put the the engine on the ground and had a friend hold a breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt while I undid the flywheel bolts. Worked pretty well.

Is this a V6 or I4? I'm pretty sure the flywheel on my K8 had 8 smaller bolts.
