Mx-3 sitting in driveway for 14 months....
Hey,
I have a mazda mx-3 gs that has been sitting in my driveway for 14 months now. I can see the brake rotors are rusted. I was just wondering if I could still use them after all this time or if i should replace the brake pads and rotors. i have 4 discs btw. when i got this car the only problem was a bad rear bearing and are there any other things i should look for before getting this car road ready?
Thanks.

That rust on those rotors will be gone the first time you press on the pedal when you are driving.
Don't worry about it.

Usually rust like that will wear off quickly. If you notice a squeeling noise then you can take the rotors off and clean them (sandpaper or whatever) and lightly scuff the pads on rough concrete and reassemble.
As for sitting that long, change the engine oil and filter before you fire it up. Then I'd drive it long enough to warm it up a couple of times and then change again. Also put a new fuel filter on it after you run a couple of tanks of gas through it and use some injector cleaner. Gas goes bad and starts to varnish up pretty quick. Probably not a lot else needed if your battery is ok.

lol i think you mean rotors?se7en wrote: That rust on those calipers will be gone the first time you press on the pedal when you are driving.
but ya, it will wear off pretty quickly, you'll just have alot of brake dust.
That is if you can even move lol.

Re: Mx-3 sitting in driveway for 14 months....
update.... thanks for the replies
changed the oil and filter
put some new gas and fuel injector cleaner
checked fluids and they look ok. however, i am planning on changing it all soon, coolant, tranny fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid. Or can i leave some of them.
Also going to change the bearings soon, I have my wheel hub assembly ready.
the wheels were rusted on at first and getting the car to budge was hard.
gotta drive it a bit to loosen the wheel because it was stuck on the last time i tried to remove it.

Re: Mx-3 sitting in driveway for 14 months....
you could have a slight vibration from the excess rust, thats about it, and sometimes general braking wont remove all of it. you might need your rotors turned if thats the case
