K-Series Similarities/Differences

Post by nabp »

I've been doing a lot of reading/searching and wanted to put this all in one post so I could reference.... Mainly from a performance standpoint and somewhat generalized (correct me if wrong):

Cylinder Heads:

-Only two different type/size of ports: Round and Square; the Square ports being larger.
--K8, KFDE, KLDE came with the Round ports
--KFZE, KLZE (including Millenia KL) came with the Square ports

-Two different valvetrains and combustion chambers
--K8, KF came with the smaller diameter valves (INT 28/EXH 23) and chambers
--KL's came with larger diameter valves (INT 32/EXH 28) and chambers

Intake Manifolds:

-K8 (and I assume KFDE) came with the smallest runners (smaller than the Round ports)
-KLDE came with runners that 'match' the Round ports
-KLZE (and I assume KFZE) came with runners that 'match' the Square ports

Bottom end:

-Only two different cranks and rods: the main journals being the same size on both cranks
--K8, KF came with the same crank and rods (with smaller rod journals)
--KL cranks have larger rod journals and matching rods

-To swap cranks, you have to use the corresponding rods. And using the KL cranks in the K8, KF would require modifications as the 'big end' of the larger rod doesn't physically fit in the bore.

One major question I have: what is different on the Millenia 2.3l bottom end?? Can everything be swapped over to a KL: crank, oil pump, etc?? I know people use the 2.3l rods but they are slightly different.... Maybe someone can help me out here with the Millenia 2.3l...

A few more questions: are the oil pumps interchangeable among all the K's? are they the same for all K's? any differences? is the crank snout the same size for all K's??

All KF-ZE's have round port intake runners, since they use K8 heads (except the cams).

K8/KF/KL oil pumps are all the same. KJ (2.3L SC) is different.

So the Lantis R that I've read about w/the KFZE and Square port IM doesn't have Square port heads??

Any more info on how the 2.3l oil pump is different? Is it a bolt-on,etc?

Thanks.

a True KF-ZE 170 HP 2.0L that came in a lantis type-R has SQUARE PORTS.
Straight neck KF-ZE's and Curved neck KF-ZEs had 160HP and had round runners..

KF-ZE from a lantis type-R had KL31 cams
KFZE 160HP version had KF-01 cams

Thanks for the confirmation - that's what I thought. Do the KFZE Square port heads have the larger HLA's on the intake side like the KLZE?

If anyone has KFZE Square port heads lying around (and IM as well), I might be interested.....
