coolant,idle,temp gauge problem!

Post by jason5151 »

ok,this is how my day went, checked my coolant this morning it was low so i added about a liter and a half of pre-mix then drove to work,fine..
got off work started car and idled fine for about a minute then jumped to 3500 to about 1100rpm then progresively came back to normal after about 10 minutes of driving! but also noticed that my heat was not working that good mmmm????
then here is the strange part my temp guage was climbing near the hot line, then i changed my heater settings then came down but then started to climb again near home,so shut the car off now here i am
once again back to the board to help me diagnose my car troubles!!
anyone here go though some thing like this?
any advice on this would be appreciated,ty in advance...

i'm just guessing but it sounds like your water pump or your thermostat. but i wouldn't think that your heater settings would affect you overall temperature that much. Did any lights come on on your dash? How many miles are on your car and when was the last, if ever, that these two items were replaced.

Did you fill the coolant with the motor running? If not you could have gotten an air bubble in your system. Check out the online manual for the correct filling method.

went to mechanics and found it to be the water pump,
not cheap to fix but im going to!
Its going to cost like over 1000.00 since im already there, doing the timing belt at the same time makes sense,
anyone think that this to be a right price for this repair, cuz ive seen in these forums this to be a fairly expensive job,and oh any other things i should replace while my mechanic has this part of my car apart?
and to blaze red i would never fill coolant with motor running!

If the motor already has coolant in it, and you are just topping it off. YOu are sopposed to have the motor running so coolant is circulating and this will prevent air pockets from forming. Read the online manual for the correct way to top off your coolant.

I did the job myself for about $150-200, new belt and pump, top-ups, but no tensioners, etc.

1000 sounds a little steep to me.....just my opinion.

 Have them check the timing belt pulleys and tensioner as well. You may want to do a search for a complete timing belt replacement kit. I've seen them going for about $250.00 which includes 1 pulley, belt and tensioner.
