94 RS Stock Engine problem

Post by TigEer »

Hello Everyone,

I'm been reading up on this site, and its been very helpful. There are a lot of dedicated friends out there willing to help each other in the MX3 community. Thanks guys.
(On to the main point)

I've a mx3 of my own, too, owned it for 2 years to present. But lately my engine seems as though its dying out on me (choking) when ever I am idling or in D gear at a stoplight. Immediately, try to search for an answer through this site and found out few other people have the same problem. However, none have posted a definite solution. Or maybe I just didn't see a definite solution posted??

My MX3 Spec:
94 RS Stock
1.6L DOHC
Engine mode (B6P?? not sure)

One thing worths said is that when i purchased the car the plastic thing that the rotor sits is broken in to pieces (b/c it was made of plastic), and the gasket was also broken. I try to find replacement parts but no luck. All i did was put it back together which are held together by the rotor sitting on top w/ distributor cap.

However, I did change spark plugs, spark plug wire, distributor cap, rotor. I haven't gotten a chance to change my fuel filter b/c of cold weather here. I was thinking it might be the injector, so I'm trying to get them from the mx3 community during part out.

Also, I have a strong possibility of changing engine, but I'm not familiar of where to get a good one that cheap. I really want to turbo this baby, although, I don't know how to do swap or install turbo. Not a total car expert, therefore, I'm hoping to get help from others.

For now, I thinks that's about it for the most part. Thanks in advanced!!

there is a "larger" black hose that connects to and below your intake, make sure its conneted. This is just one option. Search for others.

As everyone else will tell you.. use the search function. If you have found many reasons for this problem.. try some of the solutions, something will probably solve your problem.

As for the swap/ turbo: read, read, read... make lots of money and read up some more. Everything you should need is already posted on this site. IMO, if you can't fix a vac leak... (if that is your problem) you should not be thinking about a turbo. Give it a few years.

dizzy, wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors, or a faulty map or other sensor is about all it could be.

i don't think just getting a new engine would be the best solution, all of those are fairly cheap and the labor involved with a new engine is quite a bit...the BP doesn't drop in nearly as easily for us (94+) as it does for the SOHC guys

Thanks onesweet92mazda for the offer, but I think shipping would cost a lot.

i had a similar problem, a few years ago.
I changed it all cap rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter. After being to 3 mechanics. It turned out to be a faulty distributer. I wasnt pissed @ mecahnic number two cause he sent it to mechanic three because he had a different machine & did more electrical work then mechanic 2. I knew who mechanic three was & didnt use him because he screwed my father in business & my car got broken into there. I think mechanic 3 didnt do a correct job & he just told mechanic 2 two that it was my MAF. So off to the dealer ship who had same machine as mechanic 3 & it turned out to be a bad disty. The funny thing was the dealer told me that it had to come from japan. The warranty that i bought that was supposed to cover every thing they gave some BS that the disty was electrical so it wasnt covered. whewww i got that off my chest

Thanks monty73741 for the reply.

I recently changed my fuel filter about five days ago and it seems as though it has gotten a little bit better. If it is the whole distributor I think fixing the situation wouldn't be that bad, however, the whole distributor itself is expensive. Does anyone know where I can get a cheap new distributor? Also, any tip/advice when changing the distributor? Thank You Everyone in Advance!

Hello everyone,

I just want to update on my Engine problem. After countless months of waiting I've finally found and bought a distributor. I'm gonna tackle this infamous MX3 engine stalling problem when the car is not moving. Maybe this weekend after my exam. I'm gonna try monty73741 (so many thanks) suggestion and hope that it would solve the issue. The past few months my MX3 had been holding together pretty good. I have to say that the Bosch Platinum +4 is a life savor, little expensive but I think its well worth it.

However, my main problem is that the distributor that i bought was remanufactured so there is this one piece (the plastic thing that the rotor sits on) is cracked. I was wondering what i can use to prevent it from cracking more, or even to prevent it from breaking? Why bonding agent would best work for this situation (high resistance to heat and won't harm the distributor)? Thanks in advance guys!!

Sometimes you can find parts in the for sale section for a fraction of the cost and in this case without a
cracked plastic part. I would return that distributor, if the plastic is cracked you dont know what else
has happened to it when it received the smack.

Also dont use bosch platinum 4+ plugs, or bosch anything. Stick to NGK plugs and wires and if you cant find
those use Denso.

The part you are talking about is here -

You can probably get an used disty for the same price or less on ebay or from a junkyard....

Wow!!! Big Smiles on me :D I love this forum!!! Everyone on here is great!! I think I'm gonna still keep the distributor, but try to buy a new DISTRIBUTOR CAP GASKET (lol i finally know what that thing is called!! Thanks shameem) I don't want to go through the hassle of returning it and paying for the return shipping. I got the whole distributor for like $55 w/ shipping.

Just wondering, why not use bosch platinum +4 http://www.filesavr.com/boschplat4plug I thought it helped my car a lot. Also, I was wondering where can I get a new 2 core brass/aluminum radiator? I tried radiatorworld.com and ebay. Ebay have the cheap plastic kind (the one that i have). Radiatorworld have both, the all metal one and the plastic one, but I'm afraid that they will ship me the plastic one because there's no distinction between the two when I order. Is there any other reliable, cheap ($$ not quality) sites? Thanks in advance!!

Let us know when you find one. Many of us are hoping for a rad that would cross over from a honda or something. Mishimoto, koyo, etc. make high end rads. Just not for us.

Quick Question about http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carco ... type,10738, what's the difference between "Wholesaler closeout" and "Full Manf. Warranty" option beside prices? Which one is of better quality? Thanks!!!

Yay!!!! My Engine problem is finally solved!!! -- At least for now, hopefully, I just don't want to jinx myself -- After fixing it yesterday I gave it a test run and everything went smooth. No stalling of the engine at idle on P (idling stable at 500 rpm, and doesn't drop under like before), no stalling at a red light on D, and also no sputtering when stepping on the gas pedal!!! Many thanks to monty73741 and everyone who responded. :welder:

My most of my frustrations are gone and I've fallen in love with this car all over again ( not literally). All i have to do now is replace the radiator with a better one. Something that is not make of plastic and metal like the cheap OEM version.

I'm also very excited about the New MX3 Projector by Sypder in production and testing!!!!! Pass the info to other MX3-er and cast a vote!! Just want everyone to know that I'm not trying to advertise the projector. I'm just excited and would like everyone to know so that it would come true, and not end up like projectors before it that never went to sold (correct me if I'm wrong). Linky (Spyder Halo Projector): viewtopic.php?f=17&t=66738" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Have a GREAT DAY!!
