Walkthrough for a turbo mod anyone?

Post by Kveite »

I have searched around in the forum, but couldn't find a detailed walkthrough in order to turbo the v6 in a mx3 in all the steps on the way. I am only considering a low budget conversion and I already know the basics, but I would like to get more details around the mod before I start.

Can someone please link me to a page or two?

Can also be in another forum as probetalk with the same engine, but preferably for a mx3.

Thanks

Honestly its very easy.. the hard parts are tunning and getting good parts.. dont use an ebay turbo please.. they come with bad oil seals.. you can replace them but it costs another 50 or so dllrs not that much.. its a hit or miss. read my threads.. i have posted alot of useless and useful info.

This really falls in line with a post I was going to put up also.

There are alot of questions that come into play that I have not really found answers for searching here or Probetalk.

1. What is the benefit of boosting a ZE instead of a regular KL?

If the motor needs to be rebuilt from the ground up (10+psi of boost), then it seems like a waste of $1000 to buy a ZE just to tear it down and replace the crank, rods and pistons.

2. I read in the post regarding when that turbo kit was being put together, that could do 10-13 psi on stock internals on a ZE?

Going by the equation that was given in the boost pdf, 1 psi = 10bhp or so. this would be 100-130 bhp gain on a 210(?) hp motor giving 300-340 hp or so. This seems like a nice number for someone that just wants a little get up and go and isnt looking for a drag strip car or is on a limited budget.

3. If not all the internals on a ZE need to be replaced for boosting above the recommended on stock internals, what should be?

Obviously rods and pistons from reading several articles. This would then entail complete gasket replacement and since the block would be apart all bears should be replaced seeing as they have 30k+ miles on them at no boost.

4.Do we have recommended manufacturers that give high quality and decent pricing?

5. Is there a maximum distance from the exhaust manifold that the turbo can be set? If so how far? What are the drawbacks of having it further or closer to manifold?

I would be willing to pay someone to do a complete breakdown on turbos. I offer up $100 to someone that would give a complete listing of the following...

1. Parts needed for a stock internals install and recommendations for what boost not to exceed. This would include all management systems for fuel spark and such. Not a buy a turbo either, known brand, make and model that have been proven to offer good results.

2. Parts needed for a +10 psi boost. All motor internals, management system etc etc.

3. Leave out acronims (spelling) like VAF, VRIS and other stuff that alot of people dont know the meanings and just spell it out.

I have a good mechanical apptitude and just need some specifics on what is needed and how to maintain afterwards. I would have someone build me a motor to put in but really not sure where to go or how much to be look at for a decent price.

I have ideas on how I will route my piping and it is way different than others have done.

I can tear down a motor and put it together with no problem. The real issue is what are the best parts to use, where to get them, and which parts should be replaced.

I plan on going with under 15 psi of boost. Maybe I only need to replace rods and pistons in a ZE setup?

well, first step would be to order the hot pipes from ebay or someother place for a turbo probe v6(same pipes) don't pay more than about 150-175 plus shipping for them either, they really range in price on there.

I will add more later tonight when I have more time.
