NO ENGINE CHECK / HOLD LIGHT? WTF? ----> OBDII?
Hi all. Fantastic forum. Manual is a life saver.
I've just got the mx-3 1995 V6 24v 1845cc K8.
I'm having the "Hesitant / Stumbles on accleration" symptom (F2-048 in manual). - after doing a compression test wrong (with engine running)
So been through all I can check in the trouble shooting and don't have a clue. All seems ok/to spec.
So I want to check the error codes.
I jumpered the top GND pin (on the same half of the connector) to the TEN pin.
No HOLD light on the dash when key is turned to II. Nor when the pins are not connected.
Looked at an identical dash that I have from a scrapped mx-3 (1994 I think) and there's no HOLD bulb. There's never been one either as there's no marks on the contacts.
And no bulb in my dash? wrf???
So do I have OBDII or OBDI?
Car was registed 01 08 1995. (DD MM YYYY). So I thought it would be OBDI. (before 1996)
Can I get HOLD light readings from OBDII?
If it's defo OBDI, then what am I doing wrong?
Thanks a million for any help in advance.
(don't sell your fiesta until you can afford to have a spare mx-3 )

Check Engine Light (CEL) will flash when you jump pins TEN & GND
Hold light will flash when you jump pins TAT & GND
European models probably do not have those functionality - You would have to connect a test light to FEN & B+ to act as a CEL.

Hi ariesdude. Thanks for the quick answer.
Thanks for clearing up the confusion between TEN&GND/TAT&GND.
However I don't have the TAT pin!?
So I tried TEN & GND again and tried both a multimeter and a then a bulb between FEN & B+ but I go nadda!
I really need these codes but it does'nt look like I can get them.
Does anyone know if you can get an adapter (DP to PC) to read the codes or anyother info?
Thanks for the help.

I cant see that pic for some reason -
Well you will have TAT pin only if you have automatic transmission. I am not sure about this - I think you will have to jump TEN & GND and then put a test light between FEN & B+.
Also you wont see any codes if there are no codes stored in the computer to begin with. If you provide information about the car, any modifications, your location (Europe, Japan or North America), what exactly is the problem etc. that would help others when answering your questions.

I'm in UK.
It is a manual. TAT makes more sense now.
I don't know any more details I could give except it's stock. Please ask specifically so I can find out.
I tried the test light between FEN & B+ and I got nothing.
So to find out if it's working how can I trigger a code to make sure?
(Don't want to dish out for professional diagnostics for no code)
Cheers for the help.
P.S.
Going to start new thread about actual running problem as they are different.

Unplug the VAF sensor connector (the one connected to the black airbox) and try starting the engine - either it wont start or it wont run for long. But it will definitely put up codes (8 & 10 or just 8 ).

Well your car could be OBD2 then (even though obd2 was supposed to be in 96+ cars)- the sticker on underside the hood (with the vaccum hose diagram) may have something about obd2 compliance and/or you may have an extra diagnostic connector under the steering column that looks like this
- if it is obd2 then you have to use a code scanner.

It seems that 95 model may be a partial obd2 model -it could have been the test bed for a full obd2 model starting in 96 - i have a 95 protege that is partially obd2 - it wont do the ten-gnd flash thing and it has an extra connector like i mentioned next to the steering column inside the cabin (for you it will be passenger side) - it also connects to a handheld obd2 scanner and gives codes - but it doesnt support the full range of obd2 variables. Maybe its the same for 95 mx3 too.

No not this one. Can't find any other socket under the dash. And I've looked real hard. (Nearly broke my back upside down in the seat with my head on the pedals )
Is there anyone from UK/Europe that can get the codes with the GND+TEN jump trick or anyone know of an adapter to rig it up to a computer?
