Performance Chip opinions?

Post by trimble »

What does a chip actually do and would you recommend one? Anyone have one installed in their ride?

What's a standalone? I've never heard of one before? Same idea as a chip?

Okay I searched and I still don't really understand. Anyone want to take a few seconds and explain what a standalone is or what it does? Or even just more opinions on performance chips.

Honest opinion warning:

If you don't know the difference between the two then you'd better hit the books BIGTIME before you do ANYTHING....

And i suggest not doing it youself...

Roughly:

Stand-alone engine management is a computer that REPLACES your Factory computer and handles all engine controls...
300CAD - 3000CAD (depends on how big you wanna go)

Piggy-backs are generally wired into the engine harness..They take and modify the Sensor data so the ECU thinks your engine is running differently then it is..The ECU will correct these conditions and you get the desired effect.. they work... to a point...
50CAD-500CAD

THE EBAY CHIP IS A F@%#@#%#@ resistor in a box.. 99% of them are just going to give you CRAPPY fuel mileage because most engines are already running rich...The occasional one will be somewhat real...it will have a variable dwell capacitor which can hold the Cam-Angle sensor signal for a couple degrees and allow you to adjust your distributor timing beyond what you can rotate it...
.01CAD - 40CAD

Either way it sounds like you've gota lota learning todo..Until you can answer your own question DON'T buy or modify ANYTHING...

Other then a K&N Air Filter :D

there are a few cars where "chips" are available that honestly do work and get results... but the mx-3 is not one of those cars... anything you see for that is like he said a resisitor ina box and a rip off

Agreed, a lot of VWs can be successfully chipped. And domestic owners ('stangs and camaros) are big into them.
95 RS so far just a paintjob, rims suspension next then turbo...
Image I have turbo dreams and detanation nightmares

megasquirt is definetly becoming a name now... their product is getting alot of good reviews and the fact that the system is totally adapatable...

It's NOT a super-tuning piece of hard/soft-ware.. but it is definetly NOT a bad one..

I have 2 friends running boosted 13B rx-7's and using the megasquirt system, mind with all the accessories and stuff... but still...
