setting timming really need help

Post by ven »

I have a 96 mx-3 gs 1.8.
Non turbo

I would like to know about setting my timming on the distributor. Car is missfiring until the revs gets higher then it seems ok but lacks tork.

Idle is fine as soon as accelerator is pressed it chugs and missfires. Plugs wires and distributor is new . As well as the cap is new.

When timing light is applied to belt its out 11 % off TDC. is this normal. If not when I try to allign the disty by loosening off the nut and rotating, but the mark is still at 11% with nothing changing. Is thier a retartent or something I'm missing. ie. a connection I need to disconect to reset timming or something like that. if so where is it........?

Please help with any info you might have. Or problems you may have incountered simmular.

I've done a search and usually fined the results but this time I could not find anything Thank you

You have to put the car in DIAG mode.

Got to your DIAGNOSTICS box and jump the GND to TEN pins.
Start the car,
then set the timing to 10 degrees past TDC.
Turn off the car.
Pull the jumper wire and verify timing.

Your done! :)

hummm so me having it at 11 will cause it to miss fire?

now how come I can move the disty with thte bolts loose and the degrees never changes.. or the engine doesnt even change pich...

Could this even be the problem. Or am I focusing on the wrong idea..

Any idea?

Ok.. you HAVE to put in the jumper wire between TEN and GND on the diagnostic box. If you do not put in the wire.. moving the distributor will have little or no effect. Once you have set your timing.. you can remove the wire. But.. stock for the K8 (your engine) is 9-11 degrees BTC so if you are at 11 now.. you are within spec. And your misfire is being caused by something else. Do a compression check. Check your coil to make sure its readings are in check (online shop manual has the procedure for this) and check your spark plugs to make sure they arent carbon or oil fouled.

ok so Im going to have it taken to a mech and see what they say
is there anything I should have them pay special attention too.

if they find oil or carbon what would be the cause of that.....

truthly is this a hopeless type of car?

Hopeless type of car? Uhh no.. However I just noticed you have a 96 which means its OBDII and I dont know if you have the same diagnostic box that the earlier models do. A mechanic wont have any problem with this. How much will it cost? Depends on how much maintenance hasnt been done over the years.. your car is 10 years old now.. its going to need maintenance.

I agree that the cause of your misfire is not spark. You should visually inspect everything to verify, but i doubt its that since everything is on the newer side. How old is your fuel filter? I would check gas next. Compression is probably the last thing wrong, but you could check it anyways to mark that off the list.

fuel filter was done in aug 2006
and I have a spar fuel filter

as for the wires being crossed I thought the same thing so I checked them on the 20th of sept. I just cant seem to figure this out.....
I went as far as putting a new air filter in so I can limit everything I can.
if its running to rich would this cause a misfire. If so howcan I lean it out.

im going to check the gap on my plugs tonight to see if that makes a difference....

Side question
When a brand new distributor is bought. Does a rotor come with it, or is the old rotor from the old ditributor used ... ?

wondering because I went through my old bills and no where does it mention a rotor.... just currious if it come witht the new distributor

not a remand this was from factory

New distributers should come with the cap and rotor. From what you have said, the only things left that I can think of are the compression, ECU, and fuel pump maybe. Also, make sure everything is well grounded.
