How stupid can you be to do a engine or ATX and MTX swap...?

Post by Juans_93_MX3 »

In other words
How much car knowledge do you have to know to do a engine or tranny swap?

All I know (REAL EXPIRENCE not online expirences) is how to change CV Axels, Intake Manifolds on a 95 Mustang GT, T/B on a 95 GT, Underdrive Pulleys, Full Exhaust on a 95 GT, CAI on a 95 GT, changing spark plugs, changing brakes, changing distributers, changing batterys and thats pretty much all

My first CV axel change was on the drivers side. Took 4 hours because I didnt really know what I was doing
Changing the Passenger side is going to take me 2 hours and a half or 3.
I knew what to do except I was trying to be too carefull. Also, I forgot about the 3 bolts by the intermediate halfshaft

You guys think I would be able to pull off a engine or tranny swap?
I got a old 88 Accord that all it needs is a Brake Master Cylinder that can be my Daily Driver

first off im not voting.

You have to start somewhere, yea it is throwing yourself in the deep
end, but there is enough online info to cover most issues.

the biggest thing, is label everything! where it goes and what it attached
to! no joke its what we have to do in the aircraft industry not only for
FAA rules, but there is a hell of a lot of parts in a 747-400!

Im currently swapping a klze into a protege, most of it is plug and play
except for a few items which being RHD interfer with brake clyinders
and the steering rack.

Im also doing ATX to MTX at the same time, this is not so much of a
issue for me as im using a stand alone ecu!

Members of this board, are good, do offer advice and sometimes can
shed light on a subject that is stumping you, thats what this board is
about.

With trying to use the mazda ecu there is loom issues which are covered
on here, mainly to do with the neutral start issue.

try it, its easy. Of course you have to learn the basics.. you dont want to get youself killed or unable to start yor car.. lol rule of thumb! label everything.. get a parts car or a junk yard that has ALL parts and it pretty much goes in. ask fieromx3 he did it, well i think someone did it for him, again ive myself have done it on a diff car but same scenario. Neutral start switch and basic things.

pretty much if youve changed out all the fluids, filters, cooling system parts, ignition system, and replaced your torn engine mounts, or know how to do that stuff you'll have no problem doing swaps. btw, thats stuff you should always do when buying a used car, or at least check them. if u know how to do all that, you will breeze through an engine swap. the only thing holding you back would be how much time you have to work on it vs laziness that hits half way through

the only things you might not have done is to do it all that crap at the same time, and proceed lift the engine/transmission out. o and if u are changing a flywheel n clutch or tq converter then another handful of bolts.

good learning experience, on most cars no plug can go in the wrong socket and most of the time the wires are almost permentantly bent into position, placing it by the correct plug.

its nothing too hard once u know how to do the regular maintence. its not like boring cylinder's and resurfacing blocks n heads. of course i send it out for that.

I barely knew anything before starting my project. Surround yourself with people that know a lot and you will learn. I have not only put in a KLZE, but have also swapped from auto to manual. I still think i am not that smart when it comes to mechanical things. Find books, use mx-3.com, and talk to people smarter than you.
what kind of car IS that?
