Engine cuts out when given gas

Post by 93mx-3 »

OK, i put on a new distributor and my car worked great again. The timing was fine, i promise you. It worked perfect for about a week. Then on the way home today it starts having a hard time running. When i would step on the gas it would choke itself, but if i just slowly gave it gas it was fine. When i went up a hill it would again choke. Anytime i think the engine was under a load it would. When i got home i checked the distributor to see if it slipped its position and it was still lined up on my marks that i made when i replaced it. So i dont think that the timing is off. Is it a vacuum problem?I looked through the site to find other people with the problem and i was unable to find one that was resolved. They thought it was the tps or O2 sensor. Since i just replaced the disty, maybe its related to it? i need some help please....

Check your MAF! When MAF is unplugged or malfunction it happens to be the same story.

Did you get any codes? If there is a MAF malfunction CEL would be on. Check for vaccum leaks....

Does anyone know where i can find a code reader for the car? i dont want to go to autozone seeing how its 40 miles away. Ive tried to find one online but have not been succesful. If it was the MAF, to me its too much of a coincidence that after i replace the dist ythat it happens. It was a refurbished one so maybe it failed....possible?

You dont need a code reader - you can use your CEL (if you are in North America)
http://eunos30x.com/info/CEL%20Codes%20 ... mplete.pdf (Assuming that you have a V6 and didnt just post in the wrong forum)

I am assuming you probably didnt put the ECU in diagnostic mode for timing the engine - Refer to the online manualpage B2-8 for timing procedure.

Again - It would be wise to check for vaccum leaks - if it is big enough to make the engine die - you can probably hear it.

Distributor malfunction is very common and could have the same symptoms too - Here's some info about a remedy - http://www.clubprotege.com/wil/howto/hei/

Probably tps or VAF. You can check both with a multimeter. As was mentioned above, checking codes would be a good idea and all you need is a paper clip. If you have no codes and the tps and vaf check out, then you might want to check the crank sensor while you are at it, but that doesnt sound like your problem. A vacuum leak is a possibility but as was said above, it would be pretty loud if it was that major.
