hot starting problem - sorted

Post by scotland_mx3 »

hi, car is a 1992 1.6 sohc auto , uk model, the car starts and runs fine when cold, will run for a good few miles but when hot will die and refuse to start when hot , if i let it cool down for a while it will start up fine again, its been serviced recently, had new ht leads, new distributor cap and new thermostat, fuel & air filter changed. when trying to start it when hot the engine cranks over fine and it will fire for around a second and then die.

any suggestions much appreciated , its driving me mad.

cheers :(

You asked about your coolant temp sensor in your other thread - have you replaced it yet? O2 sensor is another thing that might cause problems when the engine is warmed up. Also did you check if there are any codes?

This page -
http://eunos30x.com/info/CEL%20Codes%20 ... mplete.pdf
has instructions on how to read codes - no need for a code scanner. There still maybe codes even if the CEL is not on. Its a 14 year old car - so changing the CTS and O2 sensor could be considered part of general maintenance - and they are cheap enough and easy enough to replace anyway.

when i say i have no engine light on the dashboard i meant that it does not have one fitted, it would appear the early uk model does not have the light fitted, it has the diagnostic connector under the hood so it looks like a trip to my local mazda dealer to get them to pull the codes.

i have just noticed fuel leaking out of injector on number 2 cylinder , seems to be leaking a fair bit from the o rings , could this cause my hot starting problem ?

Leaking fuel is a fire hazard and needs to be fixed ASAP - i am not sure if it will cause your starting problem - but i am glad that it wont run when hot because leaking fuel + hot engine = bad.
There is a way to get codes without CEL - Just connect a test light between FEN and B+ and jumper TEN to GND and you will have your own custom CEL
