Brake Line Question

Not sure if I am in proper forum for this one.
I need to replace my brake line (might as well do both whille under there) from the engine bay to where they connect in the rear of the car. Anyone know what size or gauge line I should use. Also what kind of length I may need.
Also is there any way to cheat on this by splicing in a piece of line for a temporary fix.
