Where can I find a tranny

Post by sk8erdude802 »

Is there any where I can order a rebuilt manual tranny? I didnt really want to get one from a junk yard unless that was just as good as ordering one. I know I can use a MX-6/mx-3/pgt tranny but I couldnt find in any older posts a place to order one...

I am wondering the same thing aswell

I think you might have to end up buying one from a junkyard and getting that rebuilt

I wonder how hard it is to rebuild a tranny by yourself... :(

Anyway, from what I see with many people, the Manual trannys can last a long time and alot of beating. They are the exact opposite of the automatic trannies

Well, I have (hopefully) all my parts for my tranny rebuild with my ZX2 gearset and my MSP LSD. My mechanic will be be pretty much doing all the work. He said it's pretty easy and we'll be doing the work in his home garage (where we've done all my car's work, including my swap), but I'm out of the country for several months, and will probably end up being a winter project, plus I want to get a new clutch and a Fidenza flywheel while I'm doing that work. But it seems that it's not a huge deal. I dont know what connections that Gro had for equipment, but he's done this mod himself, and worked alot with our trannies.

Did you go to an Autozone or something and ask? I know alot of autoparts stores can source rebuilt trannys.

Otherwise, I'm sure a tranny specialist like AAMCO should be able to source one for you.

Is getting one rebuilt really neccesary? At how much mileage should a MTX tranny be rebuilt?

No reason to rebuild one unless your having issues. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Getting a used tranny, there's no guarantee it'll be better, same, or worse condition than your current MTX. My tranny on my ZE is the original from the car, so it's 14 years old and has 216'000kms on it, 60'000kms of that is ZE torture. I'm having some shifting issues under WOT, syncros are getting messed, especially in 3rd gear, so I'm taking that oppertunity to rebuild it, and upgrade it at the same time.

I tried calling up Mazda and Ford sometime last year, they can't get them anymore

I also need to hitch on this thread, need my personal post count up so I can peruse the Wanted section.
I "loaned" the car to my vehicle-less brother and he managed 3 days before roasting ( at a minimum ) the clutch. Car has 120k miles but drove fine for me for 250 miles before the key transfer ( I am away on business for 6 weeks ).
I have found numerous posts on the reliability of the V6 MTX. Seems to hold up well short of the 3rd gear syncros ( grinding on mine before the clutch went south ). I think the label is G25? and was the same in the MX6 and Probe for the US customers. The Fidanza brand flywheel is lighter for quicker revs.
Before I tear it apart for the clutch what additional items should I consider? I don't want to double up the work. Like the original post was asking is someone specializing in these slushboxes? Thanks for any help!
