What is the best mtx tranny for swap in a GS

Post by ho bag »

I just picked up a 93 GS but its auto :(

First on my list is DE swap and mtx conversion. My question is what is the best mtx tranny to use from what car? I also plan on adding a msp lsd later and already know the work involved it that.

Im looking for something with a very very long 5th for hwy use, And fairly short other gears, not sure what my final drive options are.

Also can i reuse any of my auto axels? there both brand new so if i can reuse one it would be great.

Other then the tranny mount, axels, shifter and linkage, clutch/flywheel setup. Is there anything i need? i know i gotta get the clutch master and slave cylinders and ill probally just order a ss line and make the rest.

Keep in mind i have never owned a mazda or even worked on one BUT i do have a good knowlage of cars in general and im no stranger to motor or mtx swaps.

for a highway friendly 5th youll want an mx6 or 626 5spd

you can reuse your pass. side axle but need a new drivers side cv, also need the intermediate shaft from an mtx mx3

So a 626 mtx is the same as a mx3 tranny? i need a v6 tranny right? not a 4cly one.

And thanks on the intermidate shaft info, i guess i can probally sell my current axels and tranny becasue there brand new and in mint condition, i just have to have a 5spd though

yes a V6 626 or mx6 tranny.... the mx3 trans will rev at 4k+ doing 110 kmh on the highway, while the mx6 box will be about 1000 rpm lower

edit- you wont be able to sell the atx int. shaft, just throw it out its useless..... the mtx intermediate shaft you need will probably run you 15 bucks at a scrap yard if you pull it, so you just need to buy one axle new :D

so mx3=4k at 110
mx6=3k at 110
where will the 626 tranny sit?
