WingleBeast - 1994 MX-3 RS
hey guys i just bought my first mazda! ive been looking at MX-3's and MX-6 for the last year and finally found somthing worth buying.
has 109,000 miles the body is perfect, and engine is in nice shape.
needs a new clutch, bushings and valve cover gasket, also the locks are sticky and glovebox dosent lock anymore, so it looks like i have a few projects to do before i start tuneing it for performance. but the good thing is i have the cash to work with it... thank god for the army.
UPDATE*
i bought a ACT clutch kit that should be good for driving and raceing, i also bought nice bronzoil bushings, a gasket kit and some engine dress up stuff, hopefully the stuff will be here this week so i can do it this weekend (if its over 40 degrees). ill keep this updated with pics of my projects.

Clutch Swap
Day 1
well things deifinately didnt go as planned. i was pumped to see my new clutch from ACT but when we got workingon it i found out my jack was missing... (got to call the dealer about that) so i wasted 2 hours going to walmart to byu a new one. Then once we get underway and take the hood, battery, intake, and wheel off; things got a little difficult. bolts were seized up everywhere. needless to say i was dissapointed, we broke 2 of em.. thank god they wernt that important. I guess thats what you get when you live in michigan and buy a 12 year old car. looking around some more i found alot of brakets and bolts what will need replacing, but ill just get to those when i work on that area. anyway, the transmission fluid drain plug would not come out, nor would a bolt on the suspension; so we called it quits for a day, doused the areas in WD-40, and tomarrow we will rent some power tools and deep sockets.
UPDATE
abandoned this project till end of april when i can come home and work on it with the proper time and equipment

Before you break any more bolts and spend money on tools, try a little heat from a plumber's propane torch on those rusted bolts and the surrounding area. That, plus a breaker bar or pipe extension on your socket drive, should do the trick. I've been there often and loosened some unbelievably rusted joints. Good luck, and don't ignite any flammable liquids!

well unfortunetly i quit the clutch project. i just dont have the time, i have to drive 500 miles home on friday and htere was no way i would get it done with classes, so ill just have to wait till summer vacation. my bushings arrived today, andi took a look under the car, and it seems i got more work ahead of me. the rear control arm bushings are literally gone, deteriorated to nothing. the bolt is rusted to hell, and one end is rounded... so looks like i gotta jack it up, cut it off and buy a new bolt. the front isnt as rusted, but i still have to take the catalitic converter off... hopefully those bolts dont give me to much trouble. ill do the bushings this saturday, since i got the proper tools at home, should only take an hour or so granted the catalytic converter cooperates.

this clutch will be the end of me!!
so i got home this week and first things first, tried to drop the tranny. then looking at the suspension i had so many stuck/loctite/rounded bolts i decided to bite the bullet and pay a buddy of mine 200 bucks for the install. i figure it would be worth it, hell it would take me at least 20 hours of work just to drop the thing, not ot mention the cost of all the bolts and nuts i will ruin.
the project wasent an entire loss, i got my bushings in, also removed the front airbox, and lower air resonator. Give my car a little more air; basically just a temporary solution till my short ram gets here.
so to the shop we go on wednesday, ill let you guys know how the clutch feels

ahh the clutch is amazing. the car has a whole new feel. the accelarator is so much more responsive to the wheels.
found out i had a rear mainseal leak. a whole 2 quarts of oil leaked into my bellhousing.
so my engine ran on literally no oil for around 2 days with my sister driving it. the engine was making a horrible ticking sound. prolly somthing in the valvetrain. i loaded it up with new oil and the ticking went away. i prolly wore one of the vavle guides or somthing. really pisses me off that it was ticking athat bad and my sibling still drove it around. at least she didnt put any major miles or stree on the engine.
next up... intake

Weapon-R Secret Weapon Install
Weapon-R Secret Weapon Intake intsall
ahh my new toy in the mail! seems like not many on this board use this intake so i decided to test it out... this is how the install went.
Well first you start out with your engine bay (breather and front air box has already been removed)
We removed everything pertaining to the air intake
The instructions were veauge to say the least, and the order on some of the steps didnt make sense, like hooking up the 15mm air hose to the idle.. probably shoudl have been done before we hooked the pipe up
I had a problem with the hose kinking, since it had to do a mojor loop around to fit, so i ended up useing a peice of the original idle hose, the L-shaped part with the adapter on one end to make the last bit of turn. its not that hard to figure out
then the small vacume hose that went to the front of the stock airbox ends up behind the intake manifold, turns out they barely give you enough hose to make the reach. You have to snake it under the throttle body a certian way to make it fit, keep trying it eventually will work
unfortunetly the kit didnt come with more than one 2.5-3 inch connectors, so the MAF fits loosely
PS this kit also comes with the adapter to use the old style MAF. at no additional costs so you SOHC guys will be ok too.
just clamp the connectors down, it will work, i unfortunetly went to autozone to get 2 new 2.5-3 connectors and it turns out that if you use these, the extra 2 or so inches of the stepdowns on the connectors puts your filter into the radiator SO DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! use what they give you
as for the bracket, dont use the screw they gave you, mazda put the front air box one in handy position! just take one of the rubber grommets on your stock airbox, put it over the mounting point and use the stock nut to tighten it down.
also, the large wire that connected to the airbox up to the bumper (airbags i think) is easily dissconnected and routed through the bumper and around to the side
tada! all done.
the system is great, really gives the car greater response and a great tone. the 200 price tag is a little up there but you get what you pay for with the nice filter, and stainless everything! Also a recent magazine article placed the secret weapon intake as the best flowing intake on the market... cant beat that.
one downside is that since this intake is made for the MX-6 and ford escort, its a little generic. its a tight fit, and i had to take out my battery tie down to put the pipe in. i am htinking about just relocateing the battery to the trunk. also some might find it helpful to cut an inch or less off the front of the pipe to get a little more room with the filter.
all in all a great product.
