New member + question on cruise control

Post by Rotorhead87 »

First of all, I'm a new member. I just got a green 1993 MX-3 4-cyl about 6 months ago as a daily driver. My other car is an '87 RX-7, which I am currently rebuilding the motor on.
Now for my questions. Basically, I want cruise control, but the car didn't come with it. I found a GS with cruise control that I can pull the parts from. Would this work? I know the TB's are in different places, but as long as the mounting bracket for the cable is the same distance from the TB it could work, right? Also, is all the wiring present, or would I have to add some wiring to make it work? Thanks in advance.

I don't know if all the cars were prewired for cruise, but a GS donor car should get you all the parts you need. Get a pic of a RS with cruise for the vaccum tap location and the rest is basic replacment of parts.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your MX-3.

Thanks for the help. I have a base RX-7 and all the wiring for all possible options is put in the car. For example, all the wiring for the cruise control was there, plus all the wiring for the rear wiper is there. I guess I can get the parts and check it out. They only charged me 20 bucks for the cruise for the rx7, so its not much to lose.

Please keep us updated - I am interested in this conversion too. What are the parts required for the conversion? From an old post it looked like if you have the SOHC engine - you would need the entire wiring harness replaced ...

I am assuming that DOHC might have the harness in place already. So what else would be needed ...

1) Cruise control main switch (dash)
2) Cruise control switches on the steering
3) Cruise control box in the engine bay
4) The cable that goes to the throttle body
5) The vaccum line

There is no cable that runs to the TB for cruise. That is on auto trans only and is used to tell the tranny how much gas you are giving the car. Other than that you list looks complete.

If there isn't a cable that runs to the TB, then how does the cruise control work? In the cars I've seen, there is a cruise control unit that is attatched to the TB linkage next to the throttle cable. There appeared to be one on the GS I looked at.
Also, if I do have to mess with splicing wiring harnesses and stuff, i may just forget about it. I'll have to look into it more to be sure.

I dunno for sure how the MX3 works but the IACV or something similar could control the cruise speed.
