performance heads, pistons, etc...

Post by i'm_rich »

hey guys, just wondering if anyone knew where to find some performance upgrades for my 4-cyl. or if they even make any. i'm looking for a new performance header, heads, pistons(maybe some oversized pistons or some pop-ups) or anything that would 'beef up' those gigantic 1.6 liters. lol. anyways if anyone has some info it would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot.

P.S. i forgot to let ya'll know that it's a 1.6 DOHC when i first posted this.

sorry, cant help you there, dont know much about thoes, but id start with the basics, CAI, Exhaust, No kat maby. Maby a fuel computer, stuff like that, can add some OK hp without doing any internal work.

The main performance "upgrade" is an engine swap - if you put in a BPT motor you can make upwards of 180HP. If you want to keep the motor you can swap internal stuff from mazda miata 1.6L or you can add a turbo from an old 323. Between the faq page and the search function you can get all the info you will ever need for any of those procedures ...

i know that in 1988 mazda came out with the 1.6L DOHC 323 GTX turbo. i should be able to use a turbo off any 323 1.6 DOHC right? or just certain years? and what internal things are you talking about from the miata? those parts would be off a 1.6 DOHC as well?? any certain years?? thanks

You can try to find a '97-98 B5-ZE from a AZ-3 or Presso. This engine is rated at 120hp but on a dyno it is making the same or slightly higher power than that of a US spec BP-DE. The engine is identical to your B6 except for the stroke on the crank is a little shorter. The good thing is that the stock B6T turbo manifold bolts right-on. Running all the OE B6T turbo hardware on the B5-ZE at stock boost levels seems to equal about 180-190hp at the crank. The B5 ECU does seem to allow you to make a wider range of modifications than the US spec B6 ECU.

Going N/A you could swap in a set of more aggressive aftermarket cams just that to get the most out of them you will have to increase the compression and fuel as well. There are a lot of cams and pistions on the market. FerriaRage makes a beautiful header for the B5-DE in the BG that bolt right to the B6. Putting a merge pipe before the cat helps to extend the power band at the bottom end right through peak hp. Here again you will need to fatten up the fuel curve at the top end and a set of adjustable cam pulleys will help to get the most out of this mod. Don't go crazy porting the head on the street drive car just a mild clean up will often see greater gains that a full port and polish job in the rpm range this engine will run in. Go with a chambered muffler rather than a straight through design A chambered design like a Flowmaster pull more exhast gases through the system than what will a pipe of a continuous diameter all the way to the tip. This has an effect on the intake side as well. Often the reason that a chamber muffler doesn't seem to perform as well is be cause they lean out the engine more that a straight through system at it is often necessary to richen the fuel mixture to achieve the greatest power increase. I burned several set of plugs before I had to put in an adjustable FMU and larger pump.

I'm not 100% sure where it is made but I think it might be South Africa because it came via of one of the 323 guys in Durban. I don't think there is anyone importing and selling this header into North America unless you do it yourself.
