how to eliminate shaft play??
how to eliminate shaft play??
Just wondering on how you would fix shaft play on a turbo?? Would you have to replace the turbine and compressor wheel?? Or is it just a rebuild kit you have to get??
Shaft play is caused by worn bearings.
You can get a rebuild kit and fix it yourself, just be sure to mark the compressor wheel in which position it came off the shaft or you will have to rebalance it
Small amounts of shaft play are normal. However, if it is bad enough that the wheels made contact with the housings then the entire turbo is pretty much hosed. Depending on what it is, it would most likely be cheaper and easier to buy another.

Minimal side to side play is fine. Any in and out play is a big no no, usually means the seals are gone, but if the wheels are in good condition and you feel confident go ahead and rebuild it yourself. just be prepared to come accross some stubborn bolts.
