Aftermarket Turbo's besides the VJ's...

Post by Shades »

Question: Money aside, what turbo would you use?

During my turbo research I've learned if you go too big of a turbo you get lag. Fine...
Also that Garrett makes turbo's and HKS uses Garrett turbo's for their hybrids.
Garrett has T series of turbo's which are their ancient technology and their new GT series of turbo's are based on the T series but now have ball bearings and flow a lot better.

I was thinking Garrett GT25 or GT28... it's a battle between small, less lag, low HP to large, more lag, but high HP.

PS. Is there any other turbo manufacturers that you would use?

Honestly, i would go with the GT28/71 R or the GT28/68 R (i think thats what that one it) both are hybrids. but on a 4 banger under 2.0L they are supposed to work great. the GT28 from my understanding is based off of the GT25, exhaust side is the same on both. the GT28/71 R will be a little laggy on a 1.6 on a 1.8 it would be great. i persionally like the GT series turbos. the GT28/71R can produce as much as 350 WHP. and will spool around 3500 to 4000 RPM.

T3/T04E is pretty laggy, but makes gobbs of power.

jsut so you know not all GT's are BB. Those finishing with a -R are BB like the one Josh posted

And...

The GT25 and GT28 are considered to be on a diff. turbine "frame"

For a 1.8 BP, the GT-28RS (Disco Potatoe) would be a bad little mama. It would have good response and still have great top end power to 7000 rpm.

I've allready plotted this turbo on the compressor maps for the BP engine. It would be the most efficient in my case....

THANKS for your opinions!

Speaking of 1.8L BP's... http://www.mx-3.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=45562
I am building one myself, just waiting for parts... FM 9:1 Wiseco pistons to be exact. I'm building it tough, even with the MSBP from the Miata for extra strength.

You speak of GT28R's... there's about 10 of them! LoL

I was looking at the /60's and /71's... I'm gonna assume get the one that's able to throw out the most horse, yes?

I heard that putting on a too big of a turbo runs more chance of you blowing up stuff, but I think this is in relation to how much boost you are running?

Well If you are building the BP for horsepower, than the GT28/71R would be more of an ideal choice, maybe even larger. The last two numbers represent the compressor's exducer diameter in mm.

Blowing stuff up only means that you have detonated. Everything relies on how well heat is controlled through the engine or thermal managment. A good intercooler will take the heat out. Make sure there is enough fuel and the octane rating kept high. Timing should be conservative untill the engine is tuned to run on optimum air/fuel mixtures.

Good luck with your build up. I'm in the begining stages of yet another myself...

blowing stuff up

Not only can you crack a piston from running to lean or not having your timing advanced far enough but watch your bottom end, you really dont want to run to much power on your stock bottom end. I try to use 300 whp on the bp. Its a good semi-safe number...BUT ONLY IF ITS TUNED PROPERLY. Good news is for about 1200 you can build a bulletproof bottom end using Pauter rods and Weisco pistons. New Weisco pistons come with their rings and new wrist pins. Also lag isnt always a bad thing. I myself love to have a good bit of turbo lag especially in a car that weighs just over 2000 lbs..Turbo lag =better traction. even if you are running the same or higher hp off of a larger turbo slowing your spool time a bit can be your friend. If you are looking to build a good street turbo kit i would recommend a mitsu 16G turbo with turbo cams, Supportable of near 300 whp. Turbo spools at about 3000-3500 rps on a bp which is ideal for maximum traction...Also if you are looking for big power i would recommend the garret T3 60-1 w/048 a/r exhaust housing This is a huge compressor housing paired with a smaller exhaust housing...meaning big power(supportable of 525 WHP) without extreme lag times should spool pretty good on a 9:1 BP best thing is its only priced at $699 usd.
