first polish the car with a stage 1 "paint cleaner" and stage 2 "polish".
it'll remove all of the impurities from the finish that a simple wash can't get rid of. Also restores the color of the car somewhat by giving the paint some oils and other crap that dissipate over time.
THEN wax the car to protect the finish.
Wax doesn't make a car look "shiny", it simply protects the finish. Polishing is what makes it look awesome.

I've been using Mother's products for over ten years and find it quite good. Available just about everywhere. Try this little helping guide;

so go with a clay bar, step 1 paint cleaner, step 2 polish, step 3 wax

Dry the car
Use Stage 1 paint cleaner on car
Use Stage 2 Polish on car
and then Wax the car right after Polish?

Canadian Tire sells the Mothers and Meguiars lines. I have used the Meguiars. It is fairly clearly labeled, and colour coded eg "1: Paint Cleaner" "2: Polish" etc. They are all in red bottles but with green or yelow or other accents matching the Step number.PeaCheZ wrote:i appreciate the help, see this is my first time i will ever have waxed a car, and i want 2 do it right, my paint is in really good condition i jus want 2 make it shine....so ok if i go 2 lets say Canadian Tire and look at the mothers choices, tell me in simple steps everything i need 2 do it myself
I use the first two steps twice a year on my cars. I use other waxes and sealers.
Clay bar may deoends on what is wrong with the paint. I would tend to want to do a clean, polish, wax and see what that gets you. It is a lot of work and is better for removing surface contamints that are lodged in the paint rather than restoring oxidized paint. If your paint looks pretty good but feels kinda rough, then its a good candidate for clay bar. Be sure to use a lubricant although it can be something simple.
Any method of restorng oxidized paint is based on taking some paint off. The cleaner and polish do this relatively gently. Rubbing compound more aggressively and sanding even more. I would be very cautious before wet sanding and would want to feel that I had exhausted other options.
Canadian Tire recently had two different Simonize rotary buffers on half price sale at $20 -25. I bought one last year for 20, and while i don't find them strictly necessary, they do save time and effort on buffing an entire car. They are not powerful enough to risk major damage, unlike a real appliance like a body shop would use. Even with a mild polish and a powerful rotaery tool you can get down to bare metal surprisingly quickly on edges. Although I guess the MX-3 has few hard edges.
Check out autopia.org for all you ever wanted to know on hte subject and more.
BTW you generally will find that for finish after you have freshened the paint, the consensus best products are Zaino and Klasse. I use Klasse Sealer Glaze and All in One, and if using a true wax I use Malms. None of these are available at CDN Tire, though.
